  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC QUAD BATTERY MODULE

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking. Ketch!.. Im so glad I didnt order a bunch of after market brick gack... although bricks have their place... I just cant see using them after using this module. its so SOLID

the connector mechanism is simple and robust and ROCK SOLID due to the very clever module adapter... I will shoot a video of the adapter and plate tomorrow or saturday. (tomorrow afternoon we prep)

He he, all my V-Lock batteries will be used only for powering up portable LED lights... ;)

Ditto on the LED's - got the LitePanels. Awesome!

Have to keep those RED BRICKS working, because after this lightweight module... it will be really hard to go back to V Mount clunkiness - Save maybe in the BACK PACK.

I will say it again... attaching your first module on an EPIC is a religious experience... especially if you were around when Jim was posting RENDERS!

thanks so much for fighting the fight Jim, now I see why this shit was/is so HARD... its freaking GENIUS!

I believe quad module is included. And that custom shoulder mount has a name: "clutch" :)

Now if the Pro I/0 module was as small as that SSD module hanging off the back, that would be sweet indeed.

Put that between the brain and the batts and you have what it takes :)

So... when do we get to see what the Pro I/0 will look like?

Not sure yet... I think its still in the oven. Given its the last item shipping in the current pipeline (circa Jan 2012) Its likely to not weigh too much regardless.

But without question... once you get this Module... you already want the others ones... yesterday. This is what we have all been waiting for... not just the incredible specs
but MODULARITY... its so effin smart and fun to use!

BTW+ I have been rotating and charging 8 RED VOLTS with only 2 travel chargers non stop for 8 hours 9 minutes and 57 seconds and the camera has never powered off. Temp is normal and if I didnt need sleep
id keep it going all night.

if you treat it like data management, you can shoot continuously for days with just 2 travel chargers and 8 Volts... and this is the PROTOTYPE.

Tomorrow I will be posting high res EPIC stills in STILL MODE and will also shoot a step by step video that will post in the afternoon.

Hey Tim

Congrats! Looks great.

Can you put that rig on a scale for us?

Unfortunately the terms of the NDA prohibit me from posting anything but photos and comments. No SPECS of SIZE, DIMENSION, OR WEIGHT... especially as its a prototype and subject to change.

It's up to RED when they are ready to release those specs... and we all want them because we need CASES to hold all this incredible kit!

Hi Tim, looks awesome :)

How about runtime of 4 fully charged Redvolts in the Quad module until they are all down, i guess it should be around 2,5-3 hrs, right ?

Manuel

Yes, yes, YES!

I'm late to this party (ack, six pages in 8 hours!), but this setup has been my vision of a perfect Epic configuration from day one. There have been pictures and prototypes of the modules online and at NAB and at RED meetups for literally years now, but for some reason I feel like it still hasn't sunk in for many people yet. Just look at that first picture of the RED ONE next to the Epic that Tim has graciously posted... now that's evolution. I'm going to take it one step further and say that (for my uses, anyway), the dual battery module is where it's going to really be at. Still holds two batteries - about an hour of runtime - still are hot swappable, drain in sequence, no need to power down to switch volts, and best of all keeps that awesome Epic profile light, small, and CABLE FREE.

People keep asking to see my Epic rig setup and I tell them it's not complete yet... because I'm waiting for this!! No more hacked parts bolted on in precarious positions... no more V-locks sticking up and in the way of things. Way to go Matt, Jarred, Jim, and anyone else who has had a hand in the design of this... finally we have FORM and FUNCTION both at 100%. I'm giddy like a school girl but don't even care. This stuff just keeps getting better and better. Thank you for everything you do!

Was just thinking the same thing. Only problem I see is that if you undermounted a ENG-style shoulderpad is that you block all the rear-facing ports on the lower back of the Epic.
The clutch has some pretty decent clearance between the pad and the connectors (the picture that Jake posted is actually an older prototype clutch that's a little different), but there's another solution that in combination with the clutch makes things super easy: right-angle adapters. I bought some right angle BNC plugs for this very purpose and they work like a charm.

Also, with the RED quick release system, it's incredibly easy to separate the camera from the quick release plate, make whatever cable adjustments you need, and pop it back on again. The whole process literally takes seconds.

Tim,
Did you say "STILL MODE"? or do you mean you're just going to set up your epic to shoot stills???
Just curious.

I will test that today and all weekend. But I think that will vary with the type of shooting and RED doesnt want me to release any specs (understandable, since its a PROTOTYPE) Frankly... if you have extra RED VOLTS - the run time is FOREVER... :) because you can keep swapping the charged batteries with the depleted ones. Just buy 8 VOLTS and you wont have to worry about run times.. :)

I dont know if still mode is enabled yet. just getting familiar with the EPIC. Im just meant I am going to use an EPIC to take better pictures than my iphone so people can zoom WAY in and look at how this cool stuff connects to the EPIC

I assume the camera is just on but not rolling? Wouldn't recording dramatically increase your power consumption?

Yes, yes, YES!

You have no idea how accurate this is... too finally attach the first module is so freaking cool. It has a latch and dovetail like connector on top... that at first I hung on and was like... "Ok, thats kind of loose... maybe with these holes on top I can bolt a plate
to keep them together... THEN I looked under the Module and saw this locking mechanism... runs on a 1/8 Hex - just turn 1/4 turn and Voila it locks the module like a ROCK! SO COOL!

I definitely can see the Dual Being used more for LW Cinema and the Quad for long shoots like at a concert or all day event. What this finally delivers on is the concept of CHOICES and MODULARITY with OUT all the CABLE GACK!

OH, I also had it on Record of my incredibly fascinating camera charts. :) Had to stop to remove SSD's. But never had to power down... I imagine HDRX and 120FPS stuff will also affect power drain.

Ill be testing the crap out of it... but given its a PROTOTYPE... I wont be able to write about SPECIFIC specs... and will need to clear with RED what I can post. All I can tell you is with 8 RED VOLTS
and a Quad Module (and 2 QUAD CHArgers) one wont need to worry about run times anymore :) Pretty cool

EDIT: SO far, I was able to keep up with just 2 Travel Chargers BTW.

Hi Tim . understand ;)

I´ve 2 Redvolt Packs (8 Batteries) laying arround here and another 2 will come hopefully next week with the camera, as well as 3 travel chargers, because i was counting on the quad module from day one :)
I also have the Red Shoulder Pad here, and i think as soon as the quad module will arrive, this likely will stay on my camera 95% of its time.
