  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC QUAD BATTERY MODULE

I thought the same thing... but given the torque of these modules, I think its smart to remove that stress from the expensive BRAIN and put it on a module adapter.

EDIT: BTW the Module adpater is BOLTED to the back of the BRAIN... which makes it stronger than the quick release latches and dovetails of the modules.

Exactly.....

Thanks for sharing Tim. I can't believe we get this thing for free!

No kidding... better load up on VOLTS and Quad Chargers. This thing will run forever...

You know what the coolest thing is? Its the first time we really get to EXPERIENCE this MODULE philosophy... FF 1 year and building a camera set up
for almost any situation will be so radically more flexible to what we do now with cameras.

I am telling you attaching your first module to your EPIC is a religious experience ... I almost feel guilty being among the first outside of RED... almost :p

I'm so getting one of these... I don't see myself mounting it on camera. I see myself using the "stealth" dslr like form factor much more for my type of shooting. HOWEVER, with this quad charger taking only 2 hours to charge 4 batteries, its going to go with me EVERYWHERE.

Thats cool... but dont confuse this Quad MODULE with the QUAD Charger... 2 separate products. Remember too a DUAL BATT Module is in the works too to keep it smaller and still be able to hot swap.

Tim,

Can you measure the dimensions? Want to make sure that in designing my case, that there is space. Specifically length, and the distance for the bottom of the module to the top of the bridgeplate.

My bad. I thought we were talking about the quad charger, and I was really surprised it worked as a power source for the camera also, a 2 in 1 solution. So this is a module. Seeing that a single Red Volt powers the Epic for 20 to 30 minutes (am I wrong?), this would give aprox 2 hours of continuous recording time, correct?

I'm looking forward to the dual battery module more. That is just too bulky for my shooting- but it should prove to be an essential tool for documentary or event coverage...

Exactly Sergio / what one finally realizes with modules
Is that we can own the SAMe camera and have CHOICES
for Config.

That Jannard is pretty sharp - and should win a technical Oscar or 50 !

How long is it lasting with all 4? The quad charger is estimated at a 2 hour charge for all 4. Will they die before that?

The space under the quad and behind the exposed base of the Epic SCREAMS for a custom shoulder mount :) Would look very ENG friendly then!

Was there a price announced for the Quad module? I have lost track of what costs what and what comes with our Epic-X StgII kit :)

I believe quad module is included. And that custom shoulder mount has a name: "clutch" :)

Was just thinking the same thing. Only problem I see is that if you undermounted a ENG-style shoulderpad is that you block all the rear-facing ports on the lower back of the Epic.

Question Tim, What happens when you put one Red Volt in the side handle and 4 on the module? Meaning, which batteries get drained first? Can I leave one Red Volt in the handle all day and use it like a Bebop to power the camera when I change all 4 Red Volts on the module? Or does it drain the battery in the side handle first? I guess you could always just pop a batt in the side handle every time you change batteries. I'd like to change all 4 batts at one time without powering down. Although, if it drains them sequencially I guess its not really difficult to just swap out the dead ones as you go. Thanks Tim, and thanks Red for making such a revolutionary camera system :)

Hey Clint. Good questions. Save I dont have my Side Handle yet... remember this is a prototype and a work in progress but here are my guesses.

1. Not sure WHY you would put a volt in the Side Handle when you have the Quad? But I imagine it would drain the Quad first and then the handle.
2. You asnwered your own question... with sequential draining... you can easily swap with a quick glance at the Monitor (when enabled) or by pressing the status button, which Im doing now.
3. Right now they drain rear to front. I.e Left Rear then Right Rear. The Left front and finally Right Front. At least on the module I have.
4. I don't see any value to draining them at the same time. How would you hot swap?
5. If you want less Swapping... remember the Red Volt XL is coming and takes up TWO spots. So you would just flip left and right Volt XL's. (What I plan to do)

Summary: One HOPES that the side handle would drain last... so when you lose all 4 Red Volts in the Quad, you can keep going while you swapping.

at BASTIAN and Jon. There is also ANOTHER app for that... its shipping in January... its called the PRO I/O module which will attach before or after the Quad Batt Module. Depending on where you want the weight.

Im telling you all right now... you will not appreciate how GENIUS modules are until you start attaching them for the first time... All that WIRE GACK... is reduced to elegant pins and connectors. Freaking awesome!

Hey thanks Tim! Yeah, I forgot all about the XLs coming. Those will be perfect :)

No problem- I will be doing lots more testing this weekend in the wild. in the RAIN.

and for those who asked. I will post whatever dimensions I can... but as Im iunder NDA.. need to defer to RED as to how much or little I can post. And remmeber this is the prototype.

but frankly its so solid and came in a production box... and worked right out of that box... I would think its close ready to ship... or mass produce, and then ship :)

Oh... This will also make the CLUTCH so much nicer to use, and way better balanced, and more mobile, then using it with uncomfortable and impeding long Rods with the V-Lock batteries, can't wait... Thanks again for posting Tim!!

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking. Ketch!.. Im so glad I didnt order a bunch of after market brick gack... although bricks have their place... I just cant see using them after using this module. its so SOLID

the connector mechanism is simple and robust and ROCK SOLID due to the very clever module adapter... I will shoot a video of the adapter and plate tomorrow or saturday. (tomorrow afternoon we prep)
