  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC > ProRes via AJA KiPro Mini

Unless I'm mistaken, Alexa uses 444 12 bit (Resolve says 16 bit) iteration of Prores. 422 10 bit Prores is a far cry from that.

and on top of that, I believe the sdi tap on Epic, like the R1 doesn't give you a full debayer image. Technically speaking, recording pro res 1080 off the epic sdi, not only provides a inferior codec, it also provides a inferior rendered amount of resolution and color compared to even the pro res hq that would off an Alexa let alone the 4x4. Let's face it, the true quality of the Epic is the R3D in itself, only way to work at the highest quality off any RED camera.

Deanan posted somewhere that the Epic SDI out is full debayer. I don't know about ScarletX though.

Is Epic hardware enabled for 3Gbit HDSDI ? If it is could it output 4.4.4 HD ?

Used this firmware upgrade on a feature right after it came out, totally saved us for having an easy way to use the ProRes to create EDLs to apply to the R3D footage.

Deanan's post where he says its full debayer is here

But if we're getting black borders on two sides for 4k and black borders on 4 sides for Quad HD then handing these prores files over to a client isn't an option. Any news on this?

4K is currently not full raster, this hasn't been fixed yet. One solution, although not ideal is to shoot 5K FF, then you get a full raster but since its not 16:9 you will have a slight letterbox. This is the closest currently available until we get 5K HD and/or 4K Full Raster.

I was assured by the Atomos guys that the Samurai will also support mirror file naming of the Pro Res files using the metadata in the SDI stream in a future update.

Just purchased a KiPro Mini as a ProRes solution but I get black borders so the files are not really good for finishing. Is there a workaround for this?

Carlos, apparently it's an issue coming out of the REd camera. Recently shot video this past weekend and had same issue. Gonna have to scale it 5% on NLE timeline for the time being until update comes out. Apparently it's like this with all pro res 2k recorders and epic / scarlet

its an issue with what's coming out of the Epic. Currently there is no way to get a full raster 16x9 image output from the camera. It is always boxed in by black borders. They have said they are going to address this in a firmware upgrade eventually....

Just wondering, from those using the KiPro Mini to record ProRes or DNxHD:

a. What sort of CF cards are you using?
b. What size of CF cards are you using?
c. How much ProRes or DNxHD footage can you get on a CF card?

Trying to work out the best approach for cards, size of cards and footage counter? e.g. Are you using your old RED CF cards, say 16GB and how much are you getting on them recording ProRes or DNxHD?

Thanks in advance...

:))

With the latest firmware updates (3.2.16) to the Epic and Scarlet, has anyone tested their cameras with the Ki Pro Mini?

Yes. It works, but I don't find a way to compensate for audio offset in the KPM, need to do that in the NLE.

We use the cards recommended by AJA in 32 GB, they work fine, but they don't come cheap.

Regarding space: Just get the free AJA DataCalc app to check your options.
