Hey everyone,
What are people using to control the Epic when it's on the end of the Ultimate (or any Russian type) Arm car. I've been putting the camera on there for a couple of years now and am throughly frustrated with the Redmote. Once it's inside the car it's totally useless. It'll lock up and stay that way all day. With Alexa we get a nice remote panel which is hard wired, all camera controls, perfect! Has anyone tried to extend a touch screen LCD cable to 40'? Or possible a hard wire solution for the Redmote? I have had the Epic upgraded antenna installed. It'll work OK from 15-20 feet with nothing in the way (most of the time), but inside the car, no way.......
Any help would be appreciated.
Steve

i know the redrock remote follow focus has a cable built in or added in for remote rolling.

I do not know if this is a viable option for you but I guess a spare camera head an a long cable (same kind as the 3D shooters use, I think it's a twisted network cable) would solve it all... basically keep one camera in car and use that one as a remote control by putting the camera on the crane as slave... It would make up for being the most expansive remote control on the planet but I think it would work quite solid on network cable distance, allowing you to reach all the menu's that a 3D setup does.... And when one camera breaks you can always replace it with... your remote control :)

Edit: Does EF lens data slaves... if so this option is even more valid... then you could pull focus on the camera in the car and the "remote camera would follow".... Do not know if thats the case but if so then thats a pretty good FF solution as well. :)

Wow Bjorn, that is a creative and expensive solution.....explain what's needed with the second camera....3D set up?

ahhhhh, got it. that makes sense. theres gotta be a way to make that redmote work.

I have not played with it much and it was long ago. But basically the epic and scarlets can be put into "slave mode" so when you change a setting on one camera the other one does the same. Also for triggering etc. So as I do not know for sure what is included in the "slaving" (others here knows better).

Basically in this workaround you would use the camera set to "master" as a control unit for the slave cam, which would be on the arm. The only thing in between would be a twisted network cable. (I think thats the one) The same cable that is used when shooting stereo with two epics.

This actually may work for me......where does this cable plug in?

Sorry my bad.. I think this is the cable you need but longer.

Edit: this came to my interest when shooting Submerged a friend of mine is building diving houses and he liked the alexa since it can be completely controlled on the surface via a network cable. I think this would do the same but you need a second body to control the submerged camera.

The question is: how long Eternet cable can we use? But I guess that is something RED could reply on.

Will that cable work 40' long? If so, why not just a 40' LCD cable to a Touch screen? Anyone?

Hmm... yes you have a point there :)

But as I understood that is just a GiG-E cable with lemo connectors and GIG-E cable can be pretty darn long without malfunction, I think it's different if you try to push picture though. But thats just my speculation.

just get one of these
22-105-large.jpg

http://madlyfins.com/product.php?id_product=22 or even the earlier one which is only $50 right now. It uses a standard bnc cable to trigger the camera. It needs red's breakout cable though.

But have you had your redmote replaced? Ours went back to red with out Epic M and after that it works like a charm even on really big distances and when the crane is in the line of site etc. So I would try that option before going for a second head and all that :)

Steve-

I have rented a cable from Camtec that would allow you to do this. To be honest, we had the cable on hand but never used it. We were flogging the Pursuit systems Cayenne around a lot and we all needed a breather every few minutes anyways... :)

Ask the Camtec guys, they may sell you the cable- as I think they made it in-house.

What cable was it? A long LCD cable?

Triggering is not the issue, it's getting to all the other top menus.

ahh, I missed that.
It's too bad that the redmote didn't come with a cable. The concept was great, the execution, not so much. If go pro and f55 can have a wireless app for a cellphone , you would think that red could make it work.

I checked with Stu at Camtec and he said they never had such a cable.....He said the only cable they use are from RED. :(
