  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic & old glass

Hoooo... daily vintage glass fix is so satisfying. Koo/Civan, you guys have more K35 stuff? Gunleik, awesome as always.

This thread is quickly becoming the one that I check religiously for new posts. Thanks for the images.

editing now.....

Koo, i will put up a collection of what we shot. that shot in particular was the 18mm.

K35's:

PW: k35

Based on this video i'd say hanging with Koo is like hanging with NEO for a day.....

Thanks Timur!

Will be looking into some K35's, too in a little while.

But those look like great fun!

@ Nick, Nat & Mike

THX!
Glas you enjoy it

WOW...the flares on these things are insane. So cool. Kinda look like Super Speeds. What's the image circle on 'em? Don't they almost cover full frame??!

It really looks like you might enjoy the delight of the uncompressed ikonoskop A-cam.

That way you can buy a truck load of old rare c-mount lenses for much less and get a very similar result for a heck of a lot less money.

Skin Tone Test with the Wollensak as Promised: NSFW

PW: skin

The lens is an F5.0, but i stopped down to a F5.6 for most of this, that 1/3 stop makes a big difference. ISO was set to 2500 for a large majority of this. Only the very tight close ups are at 800, where i could get exposure. A lot of the "over exposure" is the flare lifting the mid tones up, there is very little you can do to control it. Its one of the quirks of this lens. One of the oddest, but good things is that the Wollensak lifts the black level up so high with its veil flare, that it pushes it up out of the range of the noise floor. One of the reasons that despite being shot at 2500 ISO, the image is so clean. Makes me want to experiment with heavy ultracon filters on normal lenses.

Solitude & Peace and a Super MK II

You're right, it looks shitty.

Er, okay...wow.

I relate to the 'old glass' sentiment. Digital sensors on MP's or some of the other more modern glass looks way too zingy and videoish to me although will win hands down when photographing a chart (to wit : the new Ghost Rider and Drive Angry films I was constantly taken out of the movies by the over-sharp look) eliminating the "film look" barrier that many shooters strive for. Not to say this is a bad thing - just not my taste personally. The softer look of older lenses - Zeiss Speeds, K35s, old anamorphics etc seem to give a much more impressionistic film-like quality to the image. Low exposure a la David Fincher also assists this film-look quality I find.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it laso depends on what images you want to find/create.

I found myself desperately missing a 14mm master or RPP (ouch, there is none..) the oter day.

There is no one right thing or glass" IMHO. You just need to find the right thing for the image you want or shoot on the premises of your equipement.

Masters dictates.
So does my crappy Angie.

Both can be fun... If you befriend them...

Black in white while getting ready, to full-colour when dressed is an awesome technique. Were those all SuperSpeed MKII 65? I love earth-tones, and that lens (or is it your colour correction/grade) really accentuates them... particular in the skin tones.

By the way, Timur, there was no password on the vimeo clip you linked to... Man, when ISO2500 (with incandescent light no less) is sampled down to 1080p, it actually looks surprisingly clean. I'd have thought the blue-channel would be hurting pretty bad, but it doesn't seem so.
