Some interesting ideas here, and I've got to say, a ProRes output option would be a thing of beauty.
That said, having had a couple of hours to think about it, I think it likely more practical, and designed to deal with the new options in media.
My bet is that we are going to see something like a Stage II SSD option where there is some appropriate increase in cost to deal with RED's increased expense in manufacturing Epic with SSD's as the standard configuration.
But...
Given RED's history of taking care of it's early adopters, the fact that all Stage II owners are keeping their RED One's and the announced option of a SSD Module for the RED one, I'm betting there is a bundle option, let's call it the Stage II SSD conversion option where well get a goodly discount by purchasing the RED ONE SSD Module, RED Station SSD, Upgrade to Epic SSD and a couple of drives.
It simplifies data management, Updates the MX's and keeps them working and gives them faster offload, and frees up significant numbers of Red raids, and CF cards to deal with the current shortage.
Wasn't it already stated by Jim last month that SSD is now standard (side ssd instead of side cf), not an option? And he said it might be no increase, wasn't sure. AFAIK there is no reason the camera side SSD needs to be significantly more than the side CF - it's basically just a different connector. Note that the sRED station SSD module is only $250, same as the CF module. Since the media is proprietary (non standard connector) any minor increased cost could be rolled into the initial SSD drive prices.
Stage two and a half (keep your red1) stage option or ProRes hardware option seem the most likely.
How about a "take delivery now" option for those that don't mind if the firmware isn't 100% bug-free? If record start/stop works I'll take it!
But that one is intriguing too.
