I found some time ago strokes taken directly against the sun to test .. what do you think?
used only REDCINE-x

You forgot to add a hard magenta tint to the highlights and a jagged clipping line around the sun. Also I can see that you forgot to blow out the sun completely. So I do not think these shots are representative as RED footage in any sort of camera comparison test... Lol.

Tried to test a grade on both the Red and the Alexa and match as best as I could.

I know what highlights I like best...

The only way to definitively prove your discussion/argument/opinion (I've been following this thread and the previous incarnations of it and I'm still a bit unsure of which it is!) is to shoot your own test with your DP (or on your own), with an Epic and Alexa side by side.

Use the same lighting and filters/ND etc (matched) and then compare the results. Using other people's tests and comments can't ever replace first hand experience.

This thread is spiraling endlessly.

If you think Alexa gives you the rolloff and the look you want, then push for it on all your projects.

But, I think, you seem to be pretty much in the Alexa camp anyway. The point of an Epic (IMO) is to learn how it works and what options it opens up... your understanding will expand the more you use it. Alexa gives a nice out of the box feel and also locks you in to some looks more.

Relax.

It's easy to like the Alexa highlights better because they're there. In other words, the chosen exposure on the Epic has excluded that information from the sensor. And there was plenty of room on the bottom to stretch upwards IMO. Here's my grade :

certainly Björn;
it was still an example of still strong light in camera and without correction REDCINE-x only contrast and brightness.

Just pope in and see the thread is still turning like a broken record about the fucking Alexa.
I hate trolling some days more than others.

Just one note on the original R3D's of the wide shot that was provided for this test.

Strangely, the RED channel is boosted to 1.20, out of the box. Why?

When everything is set to zero the image looks like what I would expect.

I'm not going to dive any further into other people's tests.
