  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic-M #620 at the Quiksilver Pro New York

No surfer chicks in the epic edit? That means this was more of a 'water carving with floating board' video rather than a 'surfing' video.

Just kidding; lots of good stuff here. Is it just me, or was surfing (and snowboarding) invented with the sole purpose of being captured in slow-motion?

Good point Mike!

Really? I thought slow-mo was invented with the sole purpose of capturing surfing :)

It's so cool you got that that last aerial 360 from Kelly, it looks amazing !

what lens were you using for tele ?

I was so psyched when Kelly landed that trick, he's such an amazing athlete!

We used a Red Zoom 50-150mm for the intro and a Red Pro Zoom 17-50 for a couple of shots then the Red Pro 300mm for the action, in 2K you've got a very long lens which allows you to shoot from various angles.

I'm reading tons of stuff about the upcoming Scarlet and the fact that for action a 2/3 sensor is a better option but I can tell you that the Epic is an amazing camera to capture action sports.
I was already having a lot of fun shooting extreme sports and surfing with my Red One, now with the Epic, it's even better!

F??cking NIce! yeah....love to see action shots overcranked.....and especially when there's surf involved...then couple that with surfing....How did you handle focus? pulling focus manually or a follow focus? or not at all?

Brilliant piece of work....and cut on what?

also noticed on youtube you can load of course 1080p...but what is original? did you load a 2k file or higher?

Thanks a lot for your comment Johnny!
I dealt with the focus manually, when shooting surfing, I'm not a big fan of using a follow focus.
We did the first grade with RedcineX Pro then cut in FCP7 and finishing with Color.
Original upload on Youtube was a 2k file.
I can't wait to put my Epic-M in a water housing to shoot some surfing!

you might be able to do that sooooon....if some folks in Ca. will get moving on it....not gates by the way.----but actual surf housing. you may know who...so give them a nudge.
....so pulling focus by finger touch ? nice, and tough.....

.....yep, that workflow is same ive been using for years now......only last week did i switch to Premier....and dropping R3d's on timeline---i like COLOR however so then i just xml out to COLOR, then back to PP when done in COLOR.....

Would have liked to see some underwater or in water shots......soon we hope.
Nice stuff!

Pulling focus with finger is not really academic but it's easy with big and heavy lens like the Red Pro 300mm.
Hopefully we will be able to show you some water shots in a close future!

Well done. Great shooting and editing. Slater is truly an amazing athlete. Really nice to see action sports on this forum.

Génial, Vincent ! J'adore !

What FPS were you shooting at ?
Merci, ça fait plaisir!
We were shooting at 300fps during the sunny days and between 150 and 250 when it was raining.

Thanks a lot Jim, it's amazing how Slater is still dominating surfing in all aspects, tube riding, aerial, etc...

Really nice work especially on the slo-mo ramping.
