  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC + Leica-M + Pier 59

Wat's sup wit dis project? Would love to fit the 21 & 35mm 1.4, 50mm Noc and the 90mm 2.0 on my Epic. Small, sharp and able to see in the dark. The M series and Epic belong together like peanut butter and chocolate . . . will it ever happen?
Can Epic change? . . . everything else does (wink wink)

Remember.. anything wider than a 35mm Leica-M is going to be optically not so great when paired to the EPIC.. The Ray angles are so extreme they just do not work with sensors who's micro mirrors were designed for tele centric or quasi-telecentric lenses.

Does this apply to other lens manufacturers as well to some degree?

yes indeed.. thats why the RPP, Master Primes, the Fuji Zooms and the new Leica Cinema lenses perform so well, they are near-tele-centric by design.

How then do they do it on an M9? Seems like parts is parts - ray angles are the same regardless of what sensor they are hitting. Is the M9 sensor different some how . . . micro lensing or Deutschmagic? Seems like a FF35 lens should do fine on a S35 sensor since it is only using the sweet center of the light cone. I don't know much on this since I come from the stills world - would like to learn how I can get the very best lens in a Canon size and form factor. My work does not allow for 10lb primes that need rails and sticks to support them. Are Canon primes the best you can get for size and weight?

The micro lenses on the sensor can be designed for lens that have extreme lens angles and short flange distances.

What may be obvious is that on a rangefinder designed camera which is what the M9 and all its predecessors are based on has such a close lens to focal plane distance that the less are specifically designed for this.....

I have had great results with the 50mm Noct on my epic but have no hopes for the 28mm......

Any opinions on what SLR size/weight, F1.X lenses are the best for Epic. I have a set of Canon F1.2-2.0 primes now from my still shooting days - is that the best there is?

Implications of using rangefinder lenses on digital sensors designed for use with SLR (tele-centric) lenses include off-center color shift : http://diglloyd.com/articles/LeicaM/LeicaM-RayAngle.html The example is a Zeiss wide on a Leica M9 sensor, but the cause of the problem is the extreme ray angles and mismatch with the sensor microlenses - a mismatch that is worse, with similar results, when rangefinder lenses are used with SLRs. The particular way the problem shows itself in the posted photo is also a result of a mismatch/problem with Leica's in-camera firmware correction.

There are many more problems, all discussed at length on the diglloyd website. Poke around there if you like technical explanations.

This is why support for .R3D raw in photo processing programs like Lightroom would be useful. Profiling and batch processing clips for specific lens/sensor matches would be useful in some circumstances.

I get it now. Bummer . . . that 21mm 1.4 would look sexy on an Epic.

wow really? so it's the sensor . real shame.
But I have been using the leica summilux 50 1.4 apsh with great success.

Will this mount be ready by late May? Very excited about this.

Blame Leica on the extended elements towards the sensor... :-)

We are working on it.

Jim

After all it seams that RED and LEICA is mariage made in haven! Thanks Sanjin for first introduction. I hope that You will continue your valuable service for this community. Puno hvala i sve najbolje!
