  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC + Leica-M + Pier 59

Judging by these remarks alone, it seems that a lot of people will be shooting with Canon or Nikon lenses in the future - not by choice, but because demand for Leica lenses will outstrip supply by such a margin that for most people, Leica lenses will no longer be affordable. :-)

However, there are lots of lenses out there that have been underrated, and I'm not talking about cheap EF kit zooms. Pentax is apparently underrated, simply because it is too modest to label its lenses 'apo'. There are some interesting lenses in the Pentax line-up, including some 'limited' edition primes with odd aperture values. Then there are the medium format lenses which in some cases are sharper - yes, sharper - than 35mm equivalents.

I like to think that there is voodoo in technology. It would be depressing if there were no magic in it. Perhaps, though, when I say 'voodoo' I should mean 'secrets'...

It's like a Magic Flute

It's like a Magic Flute!!!

Guys, just to remind you again on this:

It was exactly three years ago in October, 2008 when I had a chance to play

first with the latest Leica Noctilux M 50mm f/0.95 Asph.

Before that I already had two older Noctilux tests with RED ONE.

Shot on RED ONE M with Leica Noctilux M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH at photo Gallery WestLicht in Vienna.
Music by W.A. Mozart, Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte), Overture, conducted by Hans Vonk and performed by Staatskapelle Dresden, Germany.

Sanjin.. we got it. I made sure to give you credit for your insight back on the first page of this thread. You don't need to keep reminding people... posts like that is what rubs people the wrong way.. and I really would like to see you embraced here given your chance at a 2nd life.

Sorry Jarred!!!

Should I delete my post now?

But you should also understand me as an early R1 reservation holder and supporter that have lost Epic-X upgrade just because playing with that sort of lens experiments.

This is a kind of scratching my past here at the forum and also it looks a bit like an itching that means my wound is healing right now.

Also I just placed my order for Scarlet-X yesterday.

It's okay, Sanjin. It's okay. Shhhh. That's it. Just stay still. Yes. Sleepy? Let your wound heal. While your wound is healing I'll look after your Scarlet for you. I'll look after it... really, really well. Precious, precious Scarlet...

Haha Karim...I bet you would take care of Scarlet heh, He'd never see it again, just the footage :P

Leica is more than any other brands limited editions though, it's insane how these lenses just create what feels ordinary on my 7D to something magical when I use my M9...it feels like a real lens (if that makes sense?)...

It's almost like lens equivalents to 'The Ring' in LOTR...seriously... It's possessive haha...I really do love them dearly...
Pretty much looking forward to my R lenses if they are similar to the M range I'm sure my EPIC/ Scarlet won't be leaving my side ever...

Now...if only someone would do an R mount to M mount mod so I could use these on the Spacecam mount :P

Really would love to see you guys do a Leica Reel Jarred... :P Perhaps on a Scarlet to boot? Be so damn awesome to see narrative work done with the M range but I do wonder how you'd put focus gears with those tabs...

Is there anyone that's compared the M range to the Master Primes? Thoughts? Especially that Noctilux...(I advise anyone that hasn't used one. Not to go near it. It's deadly addictive...)

Yeah.. supply and demand. If you think it is bad now.. just wait :)

The prices started climbing when Leica introduced its first digital M camera, the M-8 and hasn't stopped since. The release of the full frame M-9 didn't help with the prices of lenses. Up, up and up.

Great cameras and great lenses.

Jarred, I have a small collection of M lenses and waiting for my Scarlet-X. As soon as that arrives I would be happy to test the Leica M mount for you ;-)

If I'm not wrong, Sanjin moded his so that it truly does use ALL R Lenses,

that mount that Leica makes is the one he used but the one that you linked I've seen before, problem is, none of those adapters seem to accept the 19mm...

Given at this point I'm wondering if there is even a point in the 19mm but it would be nice to be able to go that wide if needed...though the R line is a TOTALLY different discussion...

I'm really curious to know what lenses will work on this, if its the same with SpaceCam or if they allowed the wider end in...because I swear I remember Jarred said that the lenses with protruding ends won't fit on this but now I can't seem to find that post? :S

For those with Canon mounts, the Leica R to Canon EF adapter plates that can be found very inexpensively online will work on Epic and Scarlet for nearly every Leica R lens. Including the 19mm.

Yeah, was going to do that for my R lenses but I'm hoping there is a proper M solution, would hate to have to switch mount just to use a lens set, it'd just mean that I could throw in my Noctilux and probably the 90 Summilux amongst my R collection...

But by the looks of things now that mount is A ok since I can't find a 19mm...

Given what Jarred says their lead engineer says about the 90...I really can't wait to get hold of an M mount and stick it on the Scarlet when it arrives...then the EPIC later  happy days!

Leica has done something very right with their 90mm lens designs. There is nothing close to the 90mm f/2 APO ASPH M and the 90/2.8 Elmarit-M on FF35.

The Summicron-R 90mm f/2 performs pretty damn well too. Extremely natural "feeling" color.

I feel weird posting images in this thread, but I don't see harm in a link. Here are some "straight" Summicron-R shots with subtle hues.

Yeah its crazy how they make their lenses just so captivating but I'm going to hold out until they Summilux the 75 and 90..(hopefully the macro version)

Was very tempted though to get the F2, but having all 1.4 would be very nice

EDIT:

Is there a new version of the Leica 21mm that doesn't have the protruding element going past the mount? Would that be useable?

Because I see -> http://www.photocrati.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Summilux-M-21mm-f1.4-ASPH-low-res-428x500.jpg
and I see .> http://en.leica-camera.com/assets/gallery/4464.jpg

The first is obvious it wouldn't work
the second looks like it would

I know the 21mm elmar won't work for sure but the 24 and 21 Lux both look like they could mount...

Imran, to me, the lens without the protrusion looks like a 3D rendering, whereas the other looks like a photo. It's possible that all of them do have the bit sticking out.

Agreed but I took a look at the 35mm Summilux which was said to be not possible and all the other lenses on the official Leica site, which is where the second photo is from, the ones that were stated not to be able to work because of the protrusion is obvious but the only 2 that are in question is the 21mm and 24mm summiluxs. The 35 Summilux can't be used thats for sure and same as all the other lenses apart from the Summarit-M 35 mm f/2.5 and beyond. So hence 21 and 24 are in question. I'll probably head down to Leica store when I'm back near one to check it out but that would open a damn world of brilliance if that was possible.

SpaceCam mount + 21mm, 24mm Summilux, 35mm 1.2 Voigtlander Nokton and so on...would need to re-do the focus tabs to allow for focus gears etc. but it'd be second best thing to Leica PL lenses

I like the first shot a lot. Beautiful light, nicely rendered.

But there is something worth noting: the little illuminated sign with the St. George cross is rendered too harshly. Nothing to do with the lens, but this seems to be a problem with digital sensors. I assume you used a digital camera for these shots?

EDIT: I suppose that highlight recovery in editing software could solve that little problem.

really sad , that RED epic can't use the full range. I could only wished that they would offer a special sensor gate for us lecia M users.
I would surely pay good money for this option.
