  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC left behind...

Not to be pessimistic, but I can't but notice the major updates for Scarlet over at scarletuser. We have not heard anything new about Epic (besides the few indirect references on RECON) since it was announced at NAB. No new renders, no more specifications - nothing near to what Scarlet is going through...

On top of that no RED-TEAM members visit these corners. It feels like EPIC has been left behind...

But why there are no threads like "Reasonable/Unreasonable Feature Request", etc... - and why no RED-TEAM member ever comes here? Jim now visits scarletuser almost on daily basis... I am patient and wait I will, just don't blame a folk for asking...
 
It does surprise me that we have such active feedback threads in this forum without even a peep from the RED team.

Scarlet will always have a more active community due to its target market. There are a lot of people who are very excited by the massive implications a camera like Scarlet has. It'll hopefully be an HVX killer, EX-1 killer, documentary/reality dream come true, high-school student filmmaker's wet dream, soccer mom's purse cam, etc. It has a huge market with a lot of potential to talk about.

The Epic, on the other hand, will only appeal to probably ~20% of the RED ONE owners out there as a reasonable camera to buy... and all of those owners are very serious about their lives in the cinema community. As a result, there won't be as much hyping and jumping up and down in here... just a group of professionals trying to build their next paintbrush.

Can't wait to get some responses from RED. I hope that they don't ignore our collective feedback until it's too late.
 
Brook - now I feel like outcast (just kidding) - as I might be on of the few who considers to buy only Scarlet & Epic without Red One. To be honest - this is mainly because of the wait-list. Even if I order one today - I will see it at best shortly before Epic will come. And I want full size S35 sensor digital cinema camera for VIP clients and the occasional 4K job. As such I see more value in the EPIC, even if it cost more then twice (But who we are kidding? At $40K it is still a bargain...). Our primary cameras will become Scarlets (we are planing to get at least 7~10) with the sole EPIC as the flagship for those "special" jobs... ;)
 
You'll have to get in line for the Epic cause anyone who has a Red and wants an Epic gets first dibs. This is unlike Scarlet where it will be like rush seating. You'll also have to order all the accessories and lenses which will add considerably to the purchase price. When I bought my Red, although the base price was 17.5K by the time the accessories were added it was about 55K.
 
Thanks Craig - I am aware of that. In the worst case scenario I will be able to buy "instantly" some of the "traded-in" Red Ones for "normal" price... I personally don't think that too many will "jump" on Epic right away. Especially since they going to have a "production-ready" Red One by then. Many will wait till EPIC is at least where Red One is today - IMHO...

I'm happy to see them work out the details of SCARLET first, and they're certainly still in the process working out lots of details for RED ONE. What they learn from developing the first two cameras will make the third one the charm.

I doubt EPIC is falling to the wayside, but I'd like to see them milk the full benefits of the education which comes from perfecting the other two cameras first. And then pour all that knowledge and expertise into the magnum opus. That will make an EPIC that is truly epic.
 
Maybe Scarlet is their focus right now.

If they truely handle things with care and let's say, in a personal way, they can't focus in the pre-production of a big time product like epic properly right now.
 
I don't know if I'd take the amount of RED team participation on one forum or another as the pulse of a project's relative prominence in the company. Though it's got to be obvious that Scarlet is aimed at a much broader market segment and will likely be the item that the company makes its greatest profit on long-term. Red One is a success but the quantities continue to be quite small relative to say the lower end offerings from Sony, Panasonic ,etc. Scarlet will be Red's iPod... :gun:

What new information on Scarlet I could find nothing?
 
You find no new info (since NAB) on Scarlet on the scarletuser forum? Are You kidding? Just of the top of my head - the new renders, new ports and ports arrangements, lens control, RGB resolving power of the new sensor, confirmation of higher DR then current Red One...

I could go on and on - don't be lazy mate!
