I just wanted to let everyone know a few of my impressions of the new system. I recently had a chance to see/work with Epic Tattos and also with the new SSDs.

First,

The Epic is so compact, really, amazing, when you see it on a 3D rig, it's easy to see why it's going to become the de facto 3D camera out there. I love the RED One and we own 2. I've worked for thousands of hours with the camera. I even talk about RED workflow in my sleep (pathetic I know). It's hard to imagine replacing something that has become the go to camera from low budget commercials to the most expensive movies on the planet, but RED is doing it, and it's going to be hard to ever look at the One in the same way now.

Second,

SSDs

I've spent a lot of time with RED's 16GB CF Cards. On Pirates of the Caribbean 4 we had around 4000 (I'll get the exact number later) downloads and the CF cards worked exactly as you'd expect, perfect and fast. With that being said, using the new SSDs will make you forget about everything else. They are small, roughly the size of an iPod, a little bit more narrow, have a form factor that allows you to only put them in one direction, and are crazy fast. They will easily download more than 2x as fast as anything you've currently used.

Third,

Image

The images from the camera are incredible. People often question why would they need more resolution when they're going to finish at 1080 or 2k, well, there are hundreds of reasons, but the biggest reason is, image quality, and there is a noticeable difference, even over MX 4.5k. I couldn't stop smiling at the footage, and I wasn't alone, big names, like the kind of names that non film people know, were blown away by the quality and how easy it was to manipulate the images.

Can't go into details, but, get ready for the ride of your lives.

That's what I've been waiting for !
And Happy B-day Mark !

Thanks for sharing, Steve. You guys are amazing out there.
Remember when we started working with MX and how shocked we were about the image improvements over M? With Epic, the same feeling comes to me over MX...perhaps with even more improved distance. We've all been able to work with other cameras and their upgrades (both hardware and software) and I openly say the distance RED continues to cover with every software and hardware upgrade has put them years beyond the alternatives.
And Mark, Happy Birthday! Finally turned 30, have you:-)

Really a great post to wake up to on a Sunday morning. Thanks for sharing.
And happy birthday

And Happy Birthday Mark

Surprised there aren't more comments on this. This is one of the most exciting posts I've read here. This is all very inspiring to hear :-)

Glad to hear I've not been kidding myself - and anyone who's ear I can chew - about how amazing this camera is going to be. The excitement is killing me!

And happy birthday Mark.

The funny thing is that tons of people still talk about Red with skepticism.

Once Epic is out we might find it is those who still try to act that way that are treated with skepticism. ;)

Actually - even though I work and breathe RED to a silly extent, I think it is a good thing that there is not only one penultimate tool that everybody likes.

The great thing about RED is how the cameras are flexible for adjustments when other nice stuff comes up. That is the real flexibility of REDraw vs baked solutions.
But admittedly also what makes a lot of people frustrated.
The media and camera is the same, but the workflows and resulting imagequality is constantly improving.

I love that.
Others, not so much...

That said, I really am dying to work on my first Epic shoot, not long from now... -:)
