  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC is alive...

Hi
1. Do you have to be a red one owner to take the tattoo option
2. If that is the case, then what if I acquired ownership by transer from 1st owner.
thanks

The tattoo option will be open to only a very select few. Those who have the privilege of having a Tattoo are first considered by the RED Team before the invites go out to the recipients...

#1 Yes

#2 Not likely, The very select few that will get the tattoo have been red adopters from the very very beginning, you wouldn't be asking if you already owned a red one so im assuming this is your first red one. To put it plainly unless you are an awsome acquaintance of Jim, i don't think ul get into tattoo and neither will i. :ack2:

Terribly sorry if im completely wrong

Jim,

Can we get the full coverage of existing PL mount lenses with 5K EPIC?

And 5x as powerful!
An Epic brain can process a mind blowing 1.5 GigaPixels a second.

And that's why I think you're missing out on a potentially large market - engineering. Being able to shoot that many raw pixels per second would be a great asset. I think a 2/3" Epic that could do 350+fps at 3K or 700+fps at 1920x1080 (windowed) would be a powerful tool for certain engineering applications like rocket launches, ordnance testing, vehicle testing, structural testing, flight testing, etc.

Probably not. The specified working temperature is only down to 0 degrees C.

Space tends to be a LOT colder.

Vacuum doesn't really have a temperature. The only heat-loss that would occur in vacuum is by heat-radiation, which happens pretty slowly. This said, I have no idea how the cameras would operate in a vacuum/space.

Unless your an academy award winning DP/ Director...
A FIRST red one owner (gibby, mark.. so on)
then you aint gettin a tattoo..

makes perfect sense..
they want guys who use the shit out of their camera to test run the epic.

Hopefully ill get to come out and play with their new toy:)

ehhh hem... guys?

That's probably VGA resolution (640*480) like the Canon 7D and 5D screens.

With the specs quoted the 2.8inch LCD would have a res of 403200 pixels, under half what you list, unless Sony in this case are stating pixels in terms of individual RGB dots, in which case you'd divide that 921 by three and end up with less.

The funny thing is even pro cameras have LCDs with resolutions like this.

The EX1r specs says the same... That's a little disturbing.

Glad even the smaller of RED LCDs is better in this aspect.

Unfortunately I don't have access to a Red One, so I don't know the answer, but with the small LCD on the 7D, when I am focusing, I use the zoom function which allows me to go to 10x zoom at a particular spot of the full image and I set focus there, then I zoom out and record.

Can you do this when you want to manual focus on the Red cameras as well when using a smaller LCD?

It's not 10X on the RED, it's a 1:1 pixel zoom. Which is ideal, because anything beyond that and you start introducing softening and distortion from scaling.

There is also the focus peaking and edge highlight tools. IMO, it's way easier to focus a RED One than a 7D.

Excellent. Yeah, I'd be perfectly happy with a 1:1 as well. I was surprised the small HD didn't offer this, but the Marshall displays do.

The more I think about it, the more the 2.8 is going to be a great solution for most of the situations. I don't really have a problem with the 3 on the 7D except for the fact when I am trying to get some crazy angles, I can't see the display. With the 2.8 on the scarlet, I'll be able to move that display all over the place if I want.

I'm thinking a 3rd party 720p display will be good for when I'm just wanting a larger screen on there, and I'll just figure out how to fabricate up a way to run off the same power. Gotta use my engineering degree for something :) After using the 2.8, I just might abandon this thought altogether after using the focus peaking and edge highlight tools.

Do you know if that is 1:1 based on 720p or 1080p monitoring outputs? I never tested it on a RED and just took their word for it, but I imagine if you are using a RED LCD or anything that isnt 1280x720 natively, you will get lose a bit of detail to scaling as well. I wonder what happens when you are running 1080p output as well all the displays hooked up to RED dont display different magnifcations for 1:1, do they? I also wonder what is actually going on in a 7D, i guess I kind of assumed 10x was an approximation and that 1:1 was what it was actually doing and 5x was just half 1:1 magnification since those certainly seem like they'd be easier to pull from the sensor. When you have an 1280x848 EVF and a 1024x600 LCD hooked up, RED isnt creating two separate, native signals for each device, is it? It's probably using the 1280x848 GUI and scaling it for display on the LCD, no? I'd be interested to know, especially with lower res RED LCDs coming and higher res monitoring options becoming more widely used. There is probably a simple answer like menus are always built at 1280x848 for RED LCD and DVI display and SDI never sees 1:1 magnifications so 1:1 is built based on natively displaying at 1280x848. The question about how/if this scales to lower res RED LCDs including upcoming ones still stands though.

I can't say for sure about any of the Red products, but on other monitoring LCDs I have either used or inquired about, the monitor itself can do scaling internally. Many televisions for instance that are 720p say they handle 1080p, but that is because it has a scaler built in.

The marshall monitor I mentioned has a scaler built in, but also, internal to the monitor itself, can show you 1:1 of what is coming in. It wouldn't matter if it were 720p or 1080p since the monitor is doing the picking of what to display.

With the Red, I certainly understand your question. Someone with experience will have to answer that! :) But on the 7D I also think you are right, I think it might be 1:1 and they are just pulling from the sensor.

You only get 1080p output from the RED One for playback, not while shooting. And 720/1080p has nothing to do with it -- the camera is always shooting in 2K, 3K, 4K, 4.5K. it does not matter for the 1:1 pixel zoom, what you get is a cropped area of the image where one pixel on the monitor equals one pixel from the sensor. I believe the only way to get the proper 1:1 is with the RED LCDs or EVF. The image feed over SDI or HDMI is a different animal. I so rarely connect an SDI / HDMI monitor to my camera, I really can't say what the current state is with the recent builds.

Right, what I'm saying is that its quite possible that 1:1 optimized for RED's 1280x848 menus is rendered at 1280x848 internally and will not quite be real 1:1 on any of their displays besides the EVF since none of their LCDs are 1280x848 natively. When you press the 1:1 view button, you dont get different magnifications depending on whether you are looking at a RED LCD or RED EVF, do you? I would think you would have to for them to all be 1:1, and then their newly announced smaller LCDs would have to be yet another magnification. Or maybe this is why they have dedicated EVF and LCD ports in RED ONE, and they render the menus independently at 1280x848 and at 1024x600 for each port, however it seems more likely to me that this is done because the 1280x848->1024x600 scaling is done inside of RED One since their LCDs are so darn skinny they probably dont have any scaling electronics in them. The EVF port would always be sending a 1280x848 signal and the LCD port would always be sending a 1024x600 signal and neither display supports scaling internally so it needs an exactly properly formatted signal from RED ONE.
