  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC is alive...

I don't know how many of you have made a movie or other long form project where you busted your ass for months on end, and then rolled it out. Now matter how "professional" you try to be, it ALWAYS stings when some genius runs to point out what's what with it.

This is just a general suggestion to the world at large, but if there is something you wish was different, or you don't like, take care in HOW you deliver that advice....

Very well put. When posting, we lack the luxury of voice tone. I struggle with this a lot, and in the end, I just don't post because I don't want to be perceived the wrong way. It's an art, some folks are good at it-I'm still trying.

I was just out this morning, laying on the ground behind a rock shooting a wolf over the top of it, camera two feet above me and the LCD flopped and angled down so I could see it and I got to thinking how much the LCD with the Red arm has changed the way I can shoot. I never intended to buy the LCD, I only wanted a EVF, but the EVF wasn't available when I took delivery of the camera. Now I don't even own the EVF. With the LCD I can run and gun with two eyes, but more importantly, I can shoot from anywhere, and mount the arm anywhere- I don't have to be in a position where I have to pull my eye up tight to the camera. It works great on a ledge where you're shooting from the wrong side of the camera, or when you're laying in a sleeping bag sleeping under your tripod, or sitting in a blind looking towards the rear of the camera yet shooting behind your back. It's really been an amazing change, I doubt I'll ever go back.

Why am I saying all this? Because: 1 - I'm very glad to hear that the new LCD's can be mounted with the Red arm like the old ones (can you remove the base?) 2- I'm glad Vico brought up the question, cause I was wondering it too (hopefully it was meant in a different tone then it "seemed" to come out in) 3 - When someone has the ingenuity (like Red) to come of with new ideas, we all want to be a part of them, comment on them, and say what we think about them, and we want to do that in the development stage while the input can still be valuable - but since we don't have them in hand we usually have no idea what we're talking about.

Now - if I could articulate my posts in half the words, and in the "right" tone I'd post more often.

It's great there is such passion and knowledge here, hopefully someday I can contribute and return the favor.

Isaac, what kind of lens is that? Canon still lens with a doubler?

Sigma 300-800. It's a gem in my opinion. Holds focus, sharper than my 150-600 or my 600 prime. A little hard on the back. It's on my camera 90% of the time. I try not to use the 2x, but if the atmosphere is decent, it has its place. Considering all the 150-600's and 800's that Century and Optex used to convert to PL mount for wildlife shooters, I'm surprised nobody is converting 300-800 to PL. - sorry for the hijack, just answering the question.

Will scarlet really be able to handle 2k projection?
I just can't fathom a sub 10k camera thriving at 2k, that being said when it's in my hands I'm sure my disbelief will be gone.

3k Scarlet should be able to produce a fully resolved 2k digital cinema image, better than any 1080p HD video camera for sure. 2k digital cinema projectors are still 1080p, just 1.89:1 widescreen ratio instead of 1.78:1 HDTV ratio. So the resolution is essentially the same as HD.

Wow.

So sorry I missed the Epic reveal last night.

Congratulations on your engineering mastery. Just astonishing!

Dillon

Since it looks like the Epic-X will no-longer say (in big letters on the top)
"S35 MYSTERIUM-X PRO CINEMA" I'm hoping I can still get this on a sticker that I could slap on there.

Hmmmm ...may have to make one. :P

I have a 30" vinyl decal plotter....I could hook you up  ...might do a huge "EPIC" for the man cave!

last one for the night...

I don't know if anybody has commented on the new interface for the Epic, but from what I can see it looks quite nice! Jarred, any chance we could see a closer shot of the screen?

cheers
Colin

Powerful specs, heat/cooling and fan noise are all part of the difficulty of what we are doing. If we had just put everything in the same size box as RED ONE... we'd have no issues whatsoever. But we couldn't do that! :-)

Jim

Yes you could do that.

I'm quite sure that I would not be the only one lining up to buy one.

Quieter with better cooling is always a good thing.

Smaller is of value as well of course, but for most of my work quieter and more reliably engineered are both vastly more important. I'd very happily take a larger enclosure in trade.

Of course getting it all is better than having to pick and choose, just saying.

It does look nice! Looks like they nailed very closely the mock-up they had posted some time back.

I do wonder why it looks like one of the four audio channels is disabled, but being pre-beta it doesn't concern me.

Does the text say "DIGITAL MEDIA NONE ATTACHED"?

Data rates... but I'm sure many Scarlet S35s will also be used.

Jim

.. I know I will be using a pair of Epic-X for the S3D rigs, but I sure also firmly believe that there will be more then a few using the Scarlet Brains for S3D rigs, do to price point, but also in some case were price is not an issue but the need to be able to use the smallest possible body with the 2/3 Mini Prime is, I truly Love those little Devils, so Tiny so Sexy.

..and just for playing.. don't we also are in the possibility of utilizing the Mini Primes on the Epic-X?

thats the tablet demo for sports illustrated and it is amazing!
i think the dsmc's are really going to make a lot of sense with how things are evolving.. the epic and scarlet will be amazing tools for the motion photo industry and it will be huge and its already here :anti-old:

Just window the sensor - but I gotta assume the OLPF will be optimized for the shooting the full chip? But yeah ...mini primes are sexy.

Would that matter? The OLPF is designed for spacial frequency, and even if you are just using a smaller section of the sensor, the spacial differences between one pixel and the next don't change, so the same OLPF would be used. The OLPF has nothing to do with the sensor size itself, but relative pixels density with respect to the dead area between the pixels where active circuitry exists.

Where an OLPF runs into problems is when people pixel skip on sensors.

I (and many others*) bet your Scarlet S35 will be the best bang for the buck of the history of moviemaking.

* 5% of the recent RED DAY attendees in Rome who came with me, for example...

I absolutely agree. The S35 is in my upgrade...wait no, that is the wrong word, my additional brains in the future after my Scarlet Fixed.

well, since I know we will end up getting both the Fixed Scarlet for Documenting all of that we do, and a Pair of 2/3 Scarlet with Mini Primes for smaller S3D rigs, I figure why not also use them on the Epic-X? Yes Mark off corse if possible we would only capture a section of the S35 Epic-X sensor, but I hope no issues with the OLPF, as Rick says.

For me it really comes down to play with the toys and see what comes out, he he.
