[When will the epic have a 'normal' hdsdi output ( not scaled, so recordable and usable )
I think it is a common thing to expect on any camera...
Perfect would be if the hdsdi can show us custom framing, like 16:9 on 3 k with s16 lenses; this will give you a much
better resolution compared to 2k

Anyone from red knows the answer: we hope all this will be working before the end of this year, otherwise production will want me use an Alexa In prores, not really my game, like to have a 'negative' in color correction.

I'm confused, you want to crop the sensor to under 2K so you can have an unscaled 1080P output? That defeats the major advantage or oversampleing not to mention gives you smaller than 2/3" FOV. Why not just record the clean output on to a Pix 240, it works great and looks amazing for a prores capture.

You'd rather shoot on an Epic using Super16 lenses, cropping the sensor, recording to Prores via HD-SDI, rather than shoot on an Alexa?

I think I'm in agreement with the Production Dept.

Shooting in 3K cropped to s16 will give you a better resolution compared to shooting 2k

As far as I know there is no clean output on the Epic, I do not want to crop 2Km I want 3k cropped to super 16 will give a better resolution then 2k s16, been doing a lot of tv series on the red in this set up, works great.

That sounds all terrible, why shoot s16 at all, are you short of 35mm lenses? I think any canon lens in 5k looks better than a s16 lens. And there are plenty of quite cheap pl 35mm glass for rent aswell. So shoot 5k. then if you do not want large files shoot with higher compression and or scale down in post.

Please explain why you would like to record the SDI and why you would like to crop the sensor?????

Working in s16 has been standard for years on tv drama series, it is a very fast way of working with a small camera.
Epic is not that good in 2 k and performs much better in 3 k cropped to s 16 ( been doing this on hd series with the red for years)
It works, production knows

No I'm not short of 35 mm lenses, please compare a alura 18/80 in 35 mm and a zeiss 11/100 in s16 and start shooting a hand hold 6 up to 7 minutes screen time drama series.

The latest builds do offer a clean HD-SDI out from whatever resolution you're recording. Shoot cropped 3K if you like but 4KHD is what we've used on all our shows, including network dramas.

The short Optios are ideal for handheld 35mm shooting.

Thanks for your reply, did not mean to confuse you ;) sorry, still would love to use s16 for tv...like the look very much, but as you know epic is soft in 2k, so this is why I want to use 3k cropped to s16, try it you'll be surprised !
I did not know the hdsdi output is clean now, no mask, from what build ?

Word!

All of them have since I got my X, just switch the monitor out from preview or menus to program.
You may have to disable the lookaround or set the opacity to 0%.
Are you talking epic or red ?

All builds have had clean output since I got mine in October, however for what you're going for it seem like Epic is not the right camera for your purposes. Not that it's the first time I've heard of it being used this way, but for this to be the primary shooting setup seems strange.

It is very strange, recording the HD-SDI output of Red/Epic is definitely not the path to a good image...

There are lots of great reasons to use S16 - 2/3" lenses, chief among them being size, weight, and cost. Outside of North America many TV dramas have traditionally been shot 16mm, and of course the documentary field has been dominated by S16 (and 2/3" HD cameras) That's why the original concept of Scarlet as an S16 3K sensor was so attractive.
