  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC frame rates...

I'd imagine you could use digital warping (kronos, twixtor, etc.) to slow these frames down twice as much before artifacting becomes a problem, too. That'd be 720p @ 720fps... Kind of cool.

Wooooooooooooom! That´s fast. 5Ks over 100 fps garantees lot of work, 2K at 300 many applications.
Congrats team.
Vico.

Did I miss a breakdown of 16 x 9 Numbers that have been tested?
What are the actual numbers/FPS in
5K 16x9
4K 16x9
3K 16x9
2K 16x9

Thanks in advance
Woody

@woody
16:9 numbers are about 20% less. These numbers are for EPIC-M and EPIC-X... not EPIC-S. These are continuous recording numbers. Battery will be used up a bit quicker when shooting high speed (as expected).

Jim

here it is.... you can do the math yourself: about 20% less for 16:9. exact numbers probably be posted soonish :)

cheers!

Mhhh... 300fps at 2k RAW recorded? Mhhh... yeah... I'll take that.

But wait, what is that you say? 127fps at Quad HD? Allrighty, I'll take that too, thank you very much.

What? Oh, yes, or course, it was heard the whole world over that we'll have to (chuckles) "compromise" to a max 120fps for full quality 5k.

Bravo.

Ooops...

...almost forgot. There is one more thing worth noting IMO:
Same max framerate as a 435 Extreme, at 4k. Which means right about the same resolved detail as a good S35 scan. If I am right, sounds like a little bit of a landmark.

Now lets see some 5k HDRx projected at 4k.

Just for reference, these are the frame rate specs for EPIC (all shown widescreen except QuadHD and 720P).

5k 2.40 = 120
QuadHD = 127
4k 2.40 = 150
3k 2.40 = 200
2k 2.40 = 300
720P = 360

Jim

Holy shit! I need a paper bag quick. If you guys are announcing this right now, that begs the question; what the fuck do you have planned for NAB? I cant wait (wish I could have made it this year though).

All I see these days when I watch a 'THE MAKING OF' video for any film, short film or music video... is RED ONE.

And it really goes to show what an impact this camera has made to the industry and that REAL professionals and IMPORTANT performances and BIG shows are being shot on the worlds new leading technology in camera equipment, that is REDs professional cinema cameras.

Jim, Congratulations. I'm sure you never get sick of hearing it so let me say it for you again, congratulations. I can honestly say that I haven't used this marvellous camera technology yet, but I haven't seen a film camera (honestly) in a 'the making of' for a long time. And that really does say something.

Although my opinion might no mean much to you or have nearly as much credibility as say, Peter Jackson's, I hope this give you even a slight kick of joy, happiness or strength to get you through the tough times Jim.

Woody...

I do think this is pretty much within safe info from my knowledge on how CMOS works...

127 fps QuadHD => 2,160 lines/f * 127 fps = 274,320 lines/second

5K 16:9 = 5129x2880y => 274,320 lines/second / 2880 lines = 95 fps
4K 16:9 = 4096x2304y => 274,320 lines/second / 2304 lines = 119 fps
3K 16:9 = 3072x1728y => 274,320 lines/second / 1728 lines = 158 fps
2K 16:9 = 2048x1152y => 274,320 lines/second / 1152 lines = 238 fps

and btw. in theory this can work as well:

PAL 16:9 = 1024x576y => 274,320 lines/second / 576 lines = 476 fps
PAL 16:9 letterboxed = 768x432y => 274,320 lines/second / 432 lines = 635 fps
NTSC 16:9 = 852x480y => 274,320 lines/second / 432 lines = 571 fps
NTSC 16:9 letterboxed = 640x360y => 274,320 lines/second / 360 lines = 762 fps

CMOS sensor typically work at lines / second. So when you reduce lines to be read per second, you increase frames / second.
While the amount of lines per second does affect the frame rate, the coloumns do not interact with that. So this would be true as well:

5K720p = 5120x720y => 274,320 lines/second / 720 lines = 381 fps
but Jim said its only 360 fps at 720p...
Well, consider this: You could put two lenses before an EPIC and shoot real stereo with a single sensor at 2.5K:
2.5K 16:9 Stereo = 2*2560x1440y => 274,320 lines/second / 1440 lines = 190 fps

To me that sounds pretty interesting :)

Where the heck is my screwdriver and those two old C-Mount lenses... (searching in the workshop)

Count on that you can't count on it :-)
Axel

360 @ 720! I love you guys for trowing that in.

its a nice touch, and kinda acknowledgement that resolution isn't always the top priority.. I could have done with those framerates last summer when filming insect swarms.. I wonder if 1080p will be thrown into the mix later?
