  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We just purchased a Red Epic X (firmware version 4.0.10)
Beautiful camera but the maximum frame rates are limited to

5k 96fps
4k 120fps
3k 160fps
2k 240fps

We have reinstalled the firmware a few times now. Turned off look around etc. Read the manual backward and forward. BTW the manual has two different max frame rates listed.

Any ideas?

Congratulations on the new Epic Dave, here is a Format Key for you.

Red Format Key
This is a key to the different Red capture formats. It contains the format name, max fps, resolution, and aspect ratio. I've included both Epic and Scarlet information on the same key; hopefully useful to those using Epic and Scarlet in A/B cam situations.

Sounds also like you might have surround view active. If you turn that off, you will be able to achieve full frame rates

I have the same problem! Anyone figure this out yet? Lookaroun is turned off. Is surround view something different?

I'm confused, aren't these the right frame rates, per the chart? doesn't sound like anything is wrong.

Doesn't the SSD matter as well? I believe you can get a higher frame rate with the 512 Gb than you can with the standard SSD.

The framerates quoted above my Mr. Holland would work on REDMags other than the 48GB mag. The 48GB would probably limit maximum framerate/compression ratios available on an Epic.

The 512GB REDMag possibly enables some lower compression at high framerates, but to my recollection, does not allow for a maximum framerate increase. Someone with a 512GB/firmware updated REDMag would need to educate and correct me if I'm wrong on that.

the 512mag - allows SLIGHTLY lower compression - BUT frames rates are the same (frames rates are all about the sensor cycling....) So on the current Epic (non-Dragon the chart Phil posted is correct.

Hey Phil, the RED Format Key you posted is great, but as others have stated there seems to be lots of discrepancies depending on other factors. Does anyone think it would make sense if I created a dynamic webpage which would catalog all of the different frame rates and it could be updated as RED makes updates? Would this be useful to many people?

i think the discrepancies are as follows per Phil's guide and what i have seen elsewhere (including the first post which is on the newest firmware) the frame rates on Epic are:

5K (HD,FF) 96
5k WS 121
4K 121
3K 160
2K 240
1K WS 400

however looking on Red.com at the tech specs for the Epic-X are listed at:

1-120 fps 5K, 4.5K
1-150 fps 4K
1-200 fps 3K
1-300 fps 2K

so as you can see there are differences. and in making a decision to go Scarlet -> Epic or Scarlet -> Scarlet-Dragon, these frame rate discrepancies become less trivial as that is one of the main decision points.
