  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

You all are going to laugh at how stupid my question is, but I need your help so laugh all you want!

The LCD cable that came with the Epic M package is pretty short (2 inches or less).

I'm guessing that a majority of you had to buy a new cable to mount it to the back of the Epic or to the side of the Epic.

I'm debating between buying a 7 inch or 12 inch cable.

Mind telling me which one you went with? What was suitable?

Mine came with the 24 inch cable. It works great with my LCD on a Noga arm. Can put it almost anywhere.

Why would they send you a 2 inch cable?

EPIC-M, as well as the LCD monitors (old and new) come with an 18" (eighteen inch) LCD/EVF cable that has one straight connector and one right-angle connector. It's possible they may not have shipped an 18" cable if supplies were low.

The shortest cable RED offers for this function is 7". Additionally, they offer longer lengths, like 6 feet and 10 feet. I use the 6ft one a lot. Perhaps the OP got a 7" one? If so, that sucks. It's a great solution for top-mounting the LCD, but useless for anything else and I wouldn't want it for my only cable solution.

I don't understand the 2 inch cable stuff. Not even sure that's physically possible... Well, at least not with an LCD/EVF cable, with a LEMO on each end; perhaps with one connector being a right-angle and there being 1/8th inch of actual "cable" between the two connectors. Come on, really people. He's asking about a longer cable to mount the LCD on the back of the camera or in other places. So I'm not sure why anyone would recommend the 12" -- sorry, Justin, I'm confused. That's still pretty short for a lot of mounting options and is shorter than what the M kit is "supposed" to ship with.

wow, this is very alarming then.

No, I mean the black portion is probably 2.5 inches. It is literally impossible to mount this anywhere but the front of the Epic M. If I try to put it on top of my top mount, it won't fit, the cable isn't long enough.

I'm kind of saddened by this considering that it'll be near impossible to mount this anywhere else and I'll have to fork another 220-250 to buy a new cable?

Maybe I can beg to a Bomb Squad rep, but this is rough.

It's not a 2 inch cable. Omitting the actual 2 right angles the black cable portion is 2.5 inches.

Maybe 4 inches total.

Maybe bc I'm Asian? They thought it suited me.

You're right that it isn't the most convenient cable length to have as part of the package, but to be fair I've now got three different cables that I use regularly, and I'm sure most are in a similar position... you couldn't expect them all bundled.

On a similar note, my M didn't ship with the 2b-1b adapter that was (at the time) necessary to power it up, that was extra. But - IMHO you just suck it up when you're wanting to walk about with a hundred grand of camera and lenses, shooting cinema quality pictures like you're shelling peas.
 
My guess is that Andy's '2" cable' is actually the 7" EVF cable. If you look at it on the store, the woven black area (and I'm not even counting the black plastic sealers) is less than 3". You can see a picture of it here:

Pretty much every Epic I've seen pictured around here uses that thing, connecting the monitor or the EVF directly to the side SSD module with as little slack in between as possible. I have no idea what has been shipped to who, but I think that's a pretty common cable. Andy is just asking which one would suit him best to mount his display farther away. Thing is, if you go with the 7" cable, you're likely to be buying the same thing you already have. That's my guess, anyway.

I would probably recommend the 18" cable (although it doesn't appear to have dual right angle connectors) as the 12" cable will really only give you 5 more inches of play.

You're telling me the 2B to 1B comes packaged now? I had to buy mine. I'm pretty sure it isn't standard or is it?

Yea, I will post a photo. I haven't actually received the camera in person yet. I had it shipped to my US address and from now till Wednesday it will be in route to me here in Saigon where I am prepping to shoot my film. Will take a pic immediately when it gets here.

I know I shouldn't expect all the cables to be bundled, I was just hoping that I could at least have a cable in order to give me options though and to be usable with the accessories that I purchased.

However, it seems to be the luck of the draw and maybe that this cable will be convenient when I get my EVF, it'll be the perfect size to keep it close to the outlet?

The cable is so short that I can't mount it to this mount:

I hope no one at Red is deciphering what I'm saying as complaining. I just wish that I was given a cable that would have allowed me to at least configure it to my accessories, not just a 1 configuration model.

I say I haven't physically received it but I had someone else rig it over webcam and had them measure that cable because they said they couldnt mount it anywhere else.....
 
My first 2 Epics came with the longer cable with a straight and a right. I guess it was 18" but they're both out right now so I'm not sure. The 3rd Epic came with a 6 1/4" cable with two right angle connectors. I have a 7" cable that I purchased separately, and it measures 7". This cable is 3/4" shorter.
 
I would contact your bomb squad rep and plead your case, see if you can swap out the cable. My guess is that they shipped you the shorter cable due to what was in stock. ...Which sucks. ...Or, maybe, it's a bonus? You get an 18" cable with the BOMB EVF too. Those are just about off back-order... If RED is about to start shipping the BOMB on demand with M kits, then giving the 6~7" cable as well as the 18" to accommodate both the BOMB and the LCD, that would be awesome. Maybe they just saved you $200, you just can't really reap the benefits just yet?

As for the 2B to 1B cable, I have yet to see anyone who didn't actually pay for it. Perhaps one or two slipped through the cracks somewhere? Until just a couple weeks ago, if you didn't buy the 2B-1B cable, you had to run off AC power... Now that the REDVOLTS are available and the new v-mount battery plate with EPIC connector, I personally wouldn't bother with the 2B to 1B cable for an EPIC purchase from here on out. ...Well, if they were to throw one in for free, I would get one.

Anyway, it sounds like we're all just speculating... Contact your bomb squad rep and see if you can get further clarification or find a solution.
 
RED Does indeed have essentially a 2-3" EVF cable. they've typically only been seen on internal cameras and the one Ted brings around. They havent been selling them so it's interesting you'd get one in your package. But that cable does exist, maybe it's a golden ticket :)

I'd call my BombSquad rep and ask them to either swap it for you.

I got the 7" with my EPIC and it's pretty short.. I was wrong I actually have the 2'.. Sorry....
