Last night, I filmed a long interview at a roller derby event. During the interview, after only a few minutes, I noticed that my image started having a very strange color distortion near certain edges. The camera was probably getting hot, so I'm curious if this has to do with the sensor heating up? The distortion looks very much like chromatic aberration, but it's very unlikely that this is the case considering the lighting of the shot. Let me know what you guys think is going on!! All of the attached grabs are from the SAME clip, and the issue slowly gets worse over the course of about 6 minutes. I am uploading the r3d to my server so I can post here. It should be available shortly.

DISTORTION IS AT ITS WORST AFTER ABOUT 6 MINUTES INTO THE INTERVIEW:

After noticing this, I stopped recording and rebooted. When I started recording again, the issue was gone.

That IS very strange. I've never seen it. Like chromatic distortion but not, the little horizontal jaggies give it away. Heat could be an issue but I would call RED for support.

Hi Jonathan

I had the same some weeks ago with my Epic. Here is the thread with the R3D and more info. http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?76700-Very-Weird-Epic-Artifacts

Red support was very helpful and we agreed on sending the camera in to be checked if it happens again, since the engineering team didn't spot anything strange on the log file. I was using firmware 3.0.0 and compression rate of 12:1. It hasn't happened again even in long takes and I wasn't able to make it happen when trying similar take specs. I only hope I don't get it anymore.

Good luck and let us know what happens in your case.

Jose, looks like your issue is exactly what I am seeing. I was on build 3.0.6, shooting 3k at 10:1.

I've submitted a support ticket to RED. We'll see what they say! Really hoping I don't have to send the camera in. I haven't been able to replicate the issue either.

It's very weird that we both got the issue in roughly the same part of the frame. I also hope it won't happen again and that I won't need to send it back, since I'm located in Mexico and it took a lot of time and paperwork to import the camera. Keep me posted on the outcome.

I've had this too: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread...in-red-and-blue-channels-any-ideas&highlight=
Same side of the frame, long takes - earlier build though, I was in the 2's somewhere. I don't remember exactly.
It only happened on the first few takes, and now that i think about it I had the fan settings wrong and had to end the take due to the fan kicking on during the interview. I've since upgraded firmware and now I set my fan to around 50% during filming and haven't seen it since.

That take was a bitch to key though :/ glad I haven't seen it since...

Jake,

I remember reading your post before I had that problem myself! And when I had that issue I was browsing Reduser and I couldn't find your post. Then I started thinking that it was my imagination that I had seen it before. Thanks for your reply here, now I have one reason less to worry about being insane ;)
