Hi guys :

Just need to clear up the minor confusion in my head with the EPIC M, X & S

EPIC M is shipping now to some owners and these have limited features which will become available as time goes on with firmware updates blah blah blah (correct ?)

Explain the difference between this and EPIC X & S for me please.
And is the EPIC S what the Scarlet S35 was supposed to be ?

Need to clarify for a very good reason.
Thanks
Nigel

Apart from the need for a real name...

To your question,

M - machined

X - Stage 1,2,3 and maybe 4? Basically after the stages are complete the new customers will get the same EPIC, probably minor differences? Not sure, but it won't be called X, X is for existing RED One people

EPIC S was the Scarlet S35 but got changed to be the bottom of the EPIC range, so yes EPIC S was and is Scarlet S35 with advancements probably, lots of things have changed and it will all be a lot more clear at NAB

EDIT:

Found the quote

"I'm using the term EPIC-X as Stage 2, Stage 3 and the S35 brain after... $28K. Not EPIC-S.

Jim"

EPIC-X is the 'replacement' for the RED ONE. Cast body, 5K sensor, up to 120FPS @ 5K etc. etc. - specs here: http://www.red.com/products/epic - will start shipping to existing customers in limited quantities shortly via the 'Stage' programs. Won't be able to be ordered until NAB at earliest.

EPIC-M is exactly the same camera, but earlier limited availability, much higher price, body is machined not cast. Yes, not all features currently enabled; consider it a beta. Shipping now, can be ordered now - contact RED for details.

EPIC-S is the same camera, same sensor, but less functionality in terms of data rates supported; lower-end electronics internally. Cheaper. Yes it used to be called 'Scarlet S35'. Available probably in autumn.

AFAIK the above is correct and current, but I don't work for RED!

Not quite right.

Aside from being machined and hand assembled, EPIC-M has one huge difference, it ships with the titanium PL mount.

The big deal about the titanium PL mount? First off it works better in situations with temperature extremes, as it expands/contracts less.

The more important deal day to day is that the titanium PL mount can accept much larger lenses without requiring support.

I've worked with the Red 18-85 and the Red 300mm on the Epic M titanium PL mount unsupported without any issues at all. The 24-290 and similar lenses still require support.

There is a downside to the Titanium PL mount, you need to have a very precise fitting to your PL mount. The tolerances are very low. Generally that is good, but it does slow down lens changes by a few seconds each, and I think that for the most part you are going to want to be able to see the lens and lens mount mate.

(An experienced AC can swap lenses blind on most PL mounts. I recommend against that. For most crews this is a non-issue, because most crews should always take extra care and watch the lens mate with the mount.)

The Epic X camera will ship to Red One owners as a package deal, and eventually as a body only for general sale. The general sale version may be renamed, but will be identical, on paper at least, to Epic X in most regards.

The Epic X cameras shipped through the stages to R1 owners will be "select" cameras, means that they will have additional quality control in selecting which components are used for assembly to make sure they are the best possible system shipped out of the factory.

Getting back to M vs. X I consider the titanium PL mount an smart upgrade. If you never work in extreme temperatures or use heavy lenses it won't matter, but if you do your life will be so much easier with the titanium mount.

That said, I expect to end up owning several mounts for Epic, including the standard steel PL mount and a Canon or Nikon electronic mount.
