  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC being challenged by the 5D people...

Yeah I don't get Daniel. Came in and posted a bunch of one word responses to a bunch of old threads. Just waiting for him to start selling something so his thread count looks like he's been around.

He's on double-secret probation. Been a user for only about 2 weeks and has yet to make any post consisting of more than 4 words. ...And that's looking through all 70 of them.

As for the substance of this thread, I'll take my EPIC over a 5DmkAnything any day for most any job. I'd still prefer the 5D for things the EPIC is not so good at, or just can't do. Like long exposures and FF photography. And for stills work, timelapse, etc.. there are other DSLRs that I would choose over a 5Dxx.

Holy cow. He posted 70 in 2 weeks?! I've got one word... "wow"

No question the Canon DSLRs are not in the same league as Red cameras in almost every way. BUT...

No one is making the distinction between Mark II and Mark III and there is a big difference. I've shot a lot on both and have had NO moire problems with the Mark III where the Mark II was nothing BUT problems. A little soft yes, but some sharpening in post goes a long way. And both 5Ds can be pretty/sensual, a look people seem to respond to. Instead of bashing the camera one might want to look at what it is that has made the Canons such a success.

Yes but the Mark III resolves just over SD in actual resolution, this is readily visible, even on Youtube. I don't see how enlarged over-sharpened skin pores, due to line-skipping, could ever be sexy.

this can't be ISO4000, ISO4000 from Scarlet looks like an image taken with an iPhone in the dark, and why r3d shows ISO 320?

Not if you black shade properly, no it doesn't, and on Epics even less so (even though they are supposed to be the same, in my experience they are not). And besides, as mentioned, this is a very crushed grade which hides a lot of problems (while creating new ones).

As far as I know, the Mark III does not longer do line skipping as did the Mark II. And the resolution depends on the lens. The Sensor is capable. Saying the Mark III does only resolve just over SD is just bashing.

I own a 5D and have shot with all versions of red and even Red One MX craps over 5D at night.
They are sensitive in low light but tremendously noisy and it's an ugly noise too next to Red.

The Mark III still line skips. Tests have shown it to resolve about 600p of resolution, so slightly more than 480p which is SD. This is not bashing, this is simply reporting of independently done tests.

You could not buy a new lens bad enough to be lower resolution than the limitations of the recording system of a 5DIII in video mode (or any DSLR for that matter). At that level, quality lenses are simply a waste on DSLRs.

And that was not true-to-life texture, because it's line-skipping and then re-building frames based on some digic voodoo to reduce aliasing- everything will still look wrong in a variety of ways. The Mark III does not do a full scale from 22MP to 1080p in real time - if you think that you've been reading too many Phil Bloom blogs.

There is nothing wrong with the first statement. In fact I say the same about the Alexa: nice image, for sure. But at least the Alexa can handle tricky lighting. The 5D cannot. Further, it isn't even an HD camera. True Blood looks really great when the lighting is not challenging (though I am watching the show on DVD, not HD). Too bad the director keeps racking focus unnecessarily every so often. I wish it were at least charming and cheesy (like zoom-ins) but it's just annoying.

But as to your second point: delusion is a good enough reason for many people. Fads, trends, fashions. The same goes for RED users, too, but for lens choices. I note that some people (a small minority) will use anything with the word 'Nikon' or 'Zeiss' on it. Heck, you have an ace camera, why not be choosy about your lenses, too?

I don't know about Zeiss and Nikon, quality varies, as it does with Canon, some great lenses, some less great, but anything with the word 'Cooke' on it and call me ready to shoot :-)

Great images Patrick good example of using natural light.
If these were pictures with out lighting they would not look as wonderful as they do.. My point is that there was a choice made by the DP, to have the subject sit here or pass by here and from the look of how great these images are the choice was adjusted to the natural lighting and how it fell on the subject in each location. So the knowledge, skill and art of lighting or being able to light is still there.. your still using lighting and equipment and all the skills of and knowledge of lighting, even though it may just happen to fall where you need it doesn't make you not needed lighting or the understanding of how to use it in these situations.

:-) Well I live in Av. de La Harpe... it's 100m from Ouchy! Nice place!

Below : pictures "without" light

Lower noise, no detail. Why bother. But it works nice on close up on faces and such. Or even wide shot if viewing at vimeo in hd but not looking at fullscreen.

DSLR looks just a bit like a wedding video even on Vimeo. Vimeo and youtube are not that bad really, quality or lack thereof does come across if you compress properly.

I love my Epics, a different league on every single way, but the sensitivity... come on, nobody test a MKIII?, It´s an amazing camera, usable in hundreds situations, especially the near "no-light" ones.

Get an external recorder for your Epic and thus apply gain before compression, or use 3:1. You will beat any camera out there in low light. Apply noise reduction with skill, to 5K, then your are more than beating any camera out there, because the more resolution, the better noise reduction works. We stopped renting C300s after we figured this out.

Are you kidding you actually really just figured this out? Try sampled noise reduction in smoke or flame, it's increduble
