Although a few try's in the past it looks like its set to happen this time. Its not only my favourite film but the film that got me into filmmaking and was the first film that made me sit up and pay attention. I am mixed about it, however I am a sucker for anything that is even loosely based on a Philip K Dick book.

I don't know. My gut says leave that movie alone.Fortunately, they can't remake the film, only a prequel or sequel but still, it just seems like a way to cash in on a great movie.

I read about this, and as someone who absolutely loves the film it immediately filled my heart with dread. Not many people of my generation have really seen the movie, and I'd hate for people to get to know Bladerunner through a much weaker prequel/sequel/spin-off.

That being said, I have hope that WB and the producers will understand that they are dealing with a monumental film and that they will give the new production a great deal of attention in light of more than the financial bottom line.

With Alcon behind films like Book of Eli and The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants...I just don't know what to expect.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Enough with the fucking remakes. When they start touching a masterpiece like Bladerunner the hollywood rep that came up with it should just go out the door. Prequel? Sequel? Really? Does everything need to have a 2nd go? Are we going to see Citizen Kane 2? I hated what they did to a lot of these remakes (Solaris comes to mind...) but this is just it. Stop screwing with the source gold material; there isn't always another to come y'know - maybe look elsewhere in, perhaps, original ideas? Oh god just please no more....

I feel that the cyberpunk genre could be very well served by 5K cinema cameras with HDR.

The dark alleys and electric nights should be a thing of beauty...

I'm OK with follow-ups when the material is inherently serial or originates with a story teller, but when it seems to come from corporation parasites I have come to expect dreck with a void where it's soul ought to be.

Twenty-seven sequels planned for 2011? Dread.

Now that's a great idea! I already can see it: Starts off with young cane having a sled accident - Rose Bud busted and all, but the world has a bigger problem, as Aliens attack and war of the worlds is loose:)

I always thought an interesting sequel would be Deckard being forced to the OffWorld Colonies with Gaff to go after a corporate takeover by Replicant manufactured CEOs... Like "Own your own Tyrell" sort of thing.
Show them what your talked about in the first film and then expand the universe.

I didn't like the sequel book. I never should have read it.

Anybody read "Future Noir?" The book on the making of Bladerunner? Great book.

It;s still a pretty good ratio - I'm sure they'll be thousands of original indies and studio films

I understand that studios are in the business of making money or they won't exist. Without movies that make money, some of us won't be employed. I know they look heavily at risk/reward. I know the obvious thing is to look at movies that had a following, that did well, that would seem to be a goldmine waiting to happen. But for some of the same reasons that they think these films are sure things they will also many times fail. In order for original (and I know that term is subjective) material to be produced someone has to take a risk. Someone has to stand up and say "we believe in this and we're going to spend the money to get it done". I suppose if we put ourselves in the position of the studio execs whose job is on the line anytime a project is greenlit, the dilemma becomes more apparent. I don't think all of them are idiots. I think they are forced into a position of having to look at a bottomline, especially now that many of the studios are owned by huge conglomerates that only have one thing in mind - making a return on investment. In that kind of system, art will always take a backseat to ROI. When the two do cross at times, it's a miracle and everyone is happy.

Hell No, this is like pissing on the Bible, you just don't do it. There are a few directors I would trust this with but anyone else will just F it up. Did they not see Indy 4? The Star Wars Prequels? Hollywood is so dead in the water and they deserve it. When was the last time they green light an original idea besides Inception?

What next? Gone With The Wind 2? A prequel to Citizen Kane? A remake of Casablanca? Is nothing sacred?

Hollywood, here is my request: stop making sequels, super hero movies, remakes of foreign films, remakes in general.

Today, a film like Blade Runner would never get made and if it did, it would be watered down, filled with implausible cg action sequences, Deckard would be played by Robert Pattinson and would have a teen sidekick, Lady Gaga would make a musical cameo in some super future dance club, Rachel would be played by Megan Fox and the plot would have more holes than swiss cheese. Oh ya, it would be in 3D.

This seems strangely...and unnervingly...accurate.

If they give it to Fincher or Ridley Scott, I'm on board. Otherwise, this seems like a really bad idea. Still, I'll probably go see it, such is my love for all things Blade Runner.

Pshaw. Make remakes. Lots of them.

They don't diminish the original in any way. If anything, it makes an entire generation of new filmmakers watch the original and gain a new appreciation for it!

Coming from a music background, I look at it as theme and variations.

Pachelbel's famous Canon in D was not the original. It was a remake of a much lesser know melodic context that several composers took a crack at. Yet, its beauty is no less because it came 2nd or 3rd. I think the 3rd Goldberg Variation is so much prettier and more inspired than the theme.

Be honest - wouldn't you guys *love* to take a crack at remaking Blade Runner? I know I would, with all the reverence and respect I have for the original informing my decisions going forward.

Lucas

There are like 100 remakes coming in the next couple of years. It's only going to get worse. Everything good will be remade because Hollywood is running out of ideas and money.

Just so we're clear you're complaining about a movie based on a book getting adapted further? :coolgleamA:

If we followed most the 'purists' in this thread Bladerunner would never have been made. "God not another movie that's just a remake of the book! How about something original!"

Pshaw.

No, I wouldn't. Honestly. I would certainly love to make something that cool some day and the more original the better. I might even enjoy playing in the Blade Runner universe a bit, with the right script, but a remake? No way.

If you have a passion for Blade Runner, an original script idea based on the original premise, and a boat load of ability I would love to see your movie!

My motive is more to encourage the green lighting of more risky and new material than a crusade against films with a number in the title.

I loved Toy Story 3 for instance. It's a sequel. It's a genre film... But it still managed to be original and had heart and soul in my opinion.
