  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-BASIC FEATURES STILL NEEDED

Proxies are not currently created in camera. So you cannot just put the card in a laptop and open up a QT proxy to view a take immediately...must use RC-X.

Another option is to pick up one of the NLEs that handles red files in real-time (Premiere, Avid, Vegas, FCPX)...

Sound Devices Pix 240 is your proxy module....solved.

Putting on another 3rd party module that needs battery power cables etc, that's nuts.
You can not mean thats a good solve for something thats just a few lines of code, code that is already written....
Red has a lot of requests both for cameras and features but, this one and many others must be quite an easy fix. And when renting out cameras you loose against alexa since client can't just take the files onto any computer and click play. It's that simple. If you need to explain for somebody in the crew how the PIX240 work and then show him how to mount it to the rest of the camera gear, and then instruct him how to empty both cards... make sure the file naming gets right etc... well then he will turn to the producer and say.. one sentence and it will include the word "alexa".... off course all epic owners will not have much problem fiddling with another box put onto the system. But the rental market is rather important. Also personally, I would prefer to have the proxy/pointers there so I did not need to start up redline just to overview a take or such.

Biggest thing for me is Dual LCD / Bomb EVF. This is a real PITA at the moment. I would love to hear when and how that is going to be addressed, (Pro I/O?)

I agree...
And I been thinking ,our programer tells me Im wrong but I can't stop think of the fact that ....
if we later are able to put modules on the cameras some of this pins in the back must hold 1080p and some other must hold power... looking at all the work the wooden camera guys and all other are doing to battery holders etc. It must be possible for a 3rd party to make a EVF module... i.e getting video and power out of the back/ pinout in the back of the epics or?

In addition to what has been said:

- Sleep modes (probably under work),
- Camera fully powered off while a battery is in the side handle,
- Possibility to load a frame, set its opacity enabling one to reframe the camera precisely in the same way,
- Menu chart as an image in the LCD/EVF, and
- a case in which the camera (brain, sidehandle, SSD, Redmote and LCD/EF) is up to pushing the power button in ready-to-shoot condition.

I started another thread about this but...

I'm not sure how anyone else feels about this but there is one thing I would love.

SNAPSHOT R3D mode in camera.

Let's say I flip that stills motion switch on my side handle.

My EPIC then does the following.

1. Compression changes to 3:1
2. enters 5K FF mode
3. Goes into HDR X mode
4. Records user definable 3-12 frames when I hit record.

This feature would make me complete.
This feature would SAVE a lot on DATA.
This feature is excellent for location scouts.

+1 on all this, especially for Camera fully powered off while a battery is in the side handle. I've wondered how long it would take to drain a fully charged RedVolt in the SideHandle that is simply powering the LED indicator that indicates there is a valid power source attached while not even powered up. It would be nice to be able to pull out a stripped-down light-weight rig out of a quick-draw bag and start shooting immediately rather than stopping to insert a battery into the SideHandle first. I don't want the battery to be draining (even slightly) simply by carrying it around in a bag ready to shoot.

A vote for programable variable speed ramps.

Oh, and don't forget the left-handed smoke shifter....

This takes about a second per clip in RCX. What's the problem? By not doing it in-camera, the camera is ready for the next shot faster. i prefer that.

Maybe I am doing something wrong, but all I get is a grey image when I create quicktime wrappers in rcx. If anybody has a solution...

One could never just take the files and "just push play" but always required the installation of the red quicktime codec. While QT wrappers are at times usefull I believe that if one wants to look at online media as opposed to rendered dailies then using RC-X is a better experience for a client anyway. I think on the balance of things the QT wrappers resulted in a lot of inexperienced people suffering due to the wrong idea they could just copy them and leave the r3d files behind.

As far as I know the pins on the back are basically a pci-e bus and purely a data transport connector. Jim 2 years ago answered my question at the q&a demo at IBC that they will not allow 3rd party integration with the electronics of the camera. What you are asking is like asking which pin in my motherboard goes to which pixel on your screen.

+1 for a prores module, really would like this as a module, the pix is just to much extra hassle. Does red have ant plans for
a prores module??
