The new EPIC render looks like its coming on fantastically.

I'm wondering if the controls on the back can't be moved or unmounted.
Brook came up with a great suggestion of having a docking station which can accommodated various add-ons.

I guess the biggest point to get a cross is the back of the camera is important real estate and that you would 9 times out of 10 mount the battery and the drive on the back so which would get in the way of the controls.

Having a solid mounting options which works like a dock would avoid the used of back rods etc and could make the camera more ergonomically.

I don't know what challenges RED face with the internal boards and it does seem that a lot of people are pointing out that the controls on the back will always be in the way of the battery and drive.

Jim are there engineering constraints that mean the controls can't be unmounted and placed on the AC camera side?

We are all after the same goal, for EPIC to be the best it can be :-)

My understanding is that the display is now removable... for both wired and wireless operation. If there's a wired plug on the smart side where many will choose to mount the display, we won't have to deal with the downsides of wireless [batteries, reception, interference] and the display can just live there 95% of the time. That would leave the back of the camera open to mounting another accessory... like a semi-permanent "magazine" where the drive and battery could mount to balance the camera for handheld.

Since Jim has said that the design is essentially locked at this point, I'm going to make an accessories thread once I grab a few minutes. :) There are some great ideas floating around already...

" the controls on Epic can be removed from the back and mounted anywhere you want... tethered or wireless. That seems to me to be a much better solution than "just" on the front left side of the camera." - Jim

I would have prefered...

Technically possible.

~Thinking out loud~

EPIC supports wi-fi. Assuming this is implemented via a standard 'web-based' interface then no worries on the iPhone front. If it needs a dedicated app there may be a problem as I don't think the iPhone SDK allows direct access to wi-fi - you can only use it as a web connection.
