  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC 3D...

Typically a 3D Op uses only 1 eye to operate as the 3D IOD might be shifting during the shot and he/she would need glasses to properly see. Which doesn't make sense.
This is true of the majority of 3D shoots.

Recently I played with the new Panasonic 3d camera at a motor racing event.
I used the overlay function to set convergence and found myself leaving the camera in overlay mode and continued shooting, quickly resetting convergance for each new shot.

I think that this is a monitoring mode that a craft cameraman could adopt.
The main issue is that the point of focus becomes more difficult to determine, not such a big problem with the small sensor on the panny.
On the same shoot we did some other tests, with positive results yet breaking a few stereo rules

3D rules are there for a reason but I would encourage exploring outside the rule book especially for docs and sports.....

In doc mode shooting a push button function that snapped convergance to the point of focus (or an offset) would be a useful tool at ones disposal to quickly set a shot without the need for an overlay view.

I'm hearing chatter about adjusting IA in post using Ocula etc.

Don't count on it to save your butt - count on it to sweeten shots.

This is true. Within reason, and depending on shot, a new i/a can be synthesized from this set of plugins. You might also want to take a look at Mystika for this.

I wonder if the physics would allow for this rig to be miniaturized such that it fits inside, behind the lens, directing to two internal sensors rather than 2 external cameras?

I wonder if the IAD can be attendant solely upon focus or if it needs to be separately adjustable? Perhaps "focus" in that case would have to be scene-aware software, an extension of the new RED focus algorithmics.

Both RED and ET will be accepting Oscars for these things in the near future, I'd bet.

I'm not a physicist but I imagine that having the light focused through a single double-convex lens creates light convergence on a singular focal point thereby eliminating the ability to create the two different points of focus necessary to create depth within a 3D image pair.

When will this available?

As soon as I get my two Epic cameras and I break out the duct tape and bailing wire!

That is quite the solution.

That is quite the solution.

Really interesting. I am generally lamenting the way 3D is being used right now. Being able shoot 3d in 5k is pretty exciting - as most 3D camera rigs are still 2k (if I recall correctly). Very cool stuff.

I've investigated this configuration. One lens gives you one POV, regardless of how you arrange the optical path to two different sensors. You need one optical pathway per eye. Lens to Sensor matched with another lens to Sensor. The test rigs I've built confirmed this.

In theory, if you had a lens that resolved a large enough image, like 65mm spherical, you could split the image, but the perspective aberrations at the opposing edges of both frames wouldn't match.

Hi Jeff, I'm not doubting your test but im interested in how Sony plan to achieve 3d from their one lens system.

One lens +optical box + prism + two cameras.

Off the record they are saying it will work with most B4 lenses.

What ever happened to that sexy side-by-side setup that was originally mocked up for the mini-primes which had two bomb EVFs and two epics with two identical lenses on one follow focus system?

This setup seems more practical.

Front Weight

Front Weight

From a professional camera operator's viewpoint, that ET 3D rig looks like all front-weight. This would be very hard to hand hold for any extended takes, which occur all too often in digital. While the pad and handles look good I think having to hold up that rig with mostly your arms would be a killer.

Better try it before you form an opinion... Jarred could let go of the rig and it balanced on his shoulder.

Jim,

Will this shoulder mount that can also accept "old" batteries exist ?

The ET rig has all new RED shoulder mount and handles... accepts RED Brick batteries no problem. You really have to see this to appreciate how cool it is.

Super!

Can't wait..seriously.

Thanks Jim

Jim,

Would it be possible to know the mount configuration (distance between bolts and distance of the sensor) so someone could make special mounts ?

I'm thinking about Canon FD etc...

These old glasses are fun too :)

I second what Jim said Lawerence, the rig might seem front heavy, but it is not at al, as the eight distributed over the top of the rig, were it seats on the shoulder and its extension behind the shoulder, provide for a perfect balance.

The RED Shoulder mount is a piece of ART, offers far superior support and safety then any other rig I ever tried, including the fantastic ET Mantis.
