  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

Well, Tessive is a different subject from RS. But who knows what the engineering dept. at RED comes up with? Something like a soft attack/decay for sensor readout?

As I haven't said anything about this yet, let me just make note of how awesome this news is, and as a Scarlet owner I'm happy to have an option like this. Though I'm worried somewhat about the cost, hopefully there's enough time between now and....whenever, to save up enough for this monster. Now:

SEMI-IMPORTANT QUESTION: Red Rocket: Will we be seeing a new version to be able to match/handle the capabilities of the Dragon sensor? Would it come out sooner or later than the Dragon sensor, or are there currently no plans? I'm currently looking into purchasing one, and while I'm sure an official announcement would be well down the road and I'd be better off purchasing one now anyway, just curious if you have any sort of word on any upgraded version being developed? Thanks.

This is why I am so happy to be apart of the RED Family. No other company on the market would offer an upgrade path from a camera thats been out for over a year to their newer better more expensive camera. The rest of the camera industry must just hate you guys at RED for doing things like this. DRAGON is the future and I can't wait to be shooting with the best equipment in the world.

Hat's off to everyone on the Engineering, Sensor, and Colo(u)r Science teams...you guys are making all our imagery dreams come true! I salute your hard work, dedication, sleepless nights, and perseverance in the pursuit of excellence!!

You aren't the Scarlet owners I was talking about ;)

Haha maybe you meant to <insert any camera mfg name here> and not Scarlet ;)

Do you think <insert camera name here> would let you trade up to a new tech after so many months/years?

Happy New "RED" Year everybody!!

Or is it the year of the "DRAGON" ;)

You guys are going to be thrilled...

I'm going to need an eyeball upgrade to go along with the Dragon upgrade. Dear RED, could you build me some eyeball implants to resolve all of the goodness that your cameras will soon be able to image, please?

This is absolutely an historic moment - digital better than film - it's kind of like the equivalent of the digital imaging singularity has arrived - it is also a testament to the magnificence and resilience of film, that it took a superhuman herculean effort in modern engineering to break through this barrier.

It seems as if RED is quitting the lens business just when we need them to innovate in this space the most, and at RED lens price points. Where are we going to get coverage for all of this 6K goodness, and how are we going to be able to afford it, if we rely on third-party vendors?

I finally just found a window to send in my EPIC-M last week, purchased in 2011, for its heatsink and redmote upgrade - before the free upgrade offer expires. It makes me look back on all of the upgrade pathways, starting with the original R1 audio board upgrade.

My camera has been physically upgraded 4x in 5 years and at least one of my two cams will get the Dragon upgrade. Two of these physical upgrades have been totally FREE, and two I have paid for - which is quite remarkable to contemplate. No other camera company has ever manifested that kind of dedication to sustaining their products.

But over time, the speed of RED still makes it hard to keep up with the cost. As exciting as these breakthroughs are to witness from the sidelines, I may be hitting the saturation point in terms of being able to keep up, unless I sell my house. Which I'm not actually opposed to doing, if only my daughter was a few years older - we still need a backyard for the trampoline more than I need more dynamic range....:emote_hippie:

Congratulations, RED team. It is truly monumental and always a thrill to see what is cooking in the kitchen. Can't wait to see what happens when the sensor gods and the color science God (hail Graeme!) pull the cart forward together.

Time is on my side, at this point. I'm going to go shake the change out of the sofa and hope that it is enough.

Happy New Year to all the Red family.
Can you estimate the signal to noise ratio of the Dragon.

That's hard, because as far as I can tell, the DR shot Jarred posted is probably optically limited rather than sensor limited. In other words, a lens-cap shot goes darker than the darkest parts of the DSC Test chart shot. I'm quite gobsmacked by this myself, so I've just checked again, and also just improved the numerical precision on my analysis code so as to be sure of what I'm seeing.........

Graeme

Congratulations!

Thank you RED Team, sounds just great, in many ways. :o)
Happy New Year

word on the street is that the Dragon sensor was reverse engineered from the dash-cam found in the crashed saucer in Roswell

Graeme,

What implications might this have on black shading? (If that still exist in Dragon)

Perfectly said Meryem. Going to go check my sofa...

However -- I'm pretty sure you will see new RED Electronic lenses soon that cover 6K WS. The boss loves lenses way too much (ever seen his collection?) to not give us the rest of the tools we need to go with this dream sensor upgrade.

Wow 2013 is going to be an amazing year.

Happy New Year everyone.

wow!, if this chart is true, you have reached about the same dynamic as the human eye can perceive. Where to go from here? Aboslutely stoked about the trade in program for Scarlet!

I just want to publicly add to Jarred's words here. Over the holidays while I was writing to code to read in these "larger than normal" raw Frankie files and deal with their larger than normal DR, our sensor team have been actually playing with the electrons to make this image happen. It's remarkable to see the progression that has lead to this almost unbelievable image.
So if you're having a drink, have one for our hidden heroes of engineering!

WOOT ... you guys ROCK! BTW from a monochrome perspective, there is a bunch of stuff that is super complex that I'd rather have you guys not worry about.

I'm shooting with chemical light (like lamps and candles), and I would prefer it that there was no IR filter placed on the sensor since I need to have a hot mirror in front of the lens (i.e. lamps get hot, so even in low light i can't use the default IR filter). Also the spatial frequency filter is something i'd prefer to do myself in the lens system, because of back light high contrast lines that mix with organic structures (high frequencies [square wave] edges mixed with organic structures create ghosting that can't be figured out globally). Another thing that I think you don't need to worry about on monochrome is the higher redcodes, since contrast is everything I never use redcodes on monochrome that are greater then 8. So from a monochrome only perspective - no IR, no low pass spatial filter, and redcode greater then 10 could be dropped. Also due to the dynamic range, I'm hoping the sensor will come out at 24 bit then I will flip it to 32 bit float inside something like nuke.

Now that you're making a new olpf/ir for the Dragon sensor, please have it be ND colored. While I understand that the company is called red and having a red reflective ir filter fits with the name, having a red circle from the filter reflecting off of the rear lens element in bright, backlit scenes makes it too problematic. Arri can make theirs without a color cast, so you should definitely be able to.

So maybe RED have got a silicon wafer that could include the leading-edge performance

with HS=High Sensitivity @ 6.0 µm, light response (V/Lux*S) 5.8, Pixel to Noise Floor (e) 3~5, Dynamic Range (db) 80.

Absolutely fantastic!!!!

Right now everything could be in a process of custom design that should meet RED Dragon requirements (Jim's and Jarred's wishes)

and also many other Epic 6K digital cine camera project needs that were requested by the high end customers in Hollywood and wider...

My special wish or a request would be to make a sort of sensor's round hole frame or window with its size big and wide enough that should open a possibility

to use wider than 50mm Leica M lenses (35mm, 28mm, 24mm,...) without any problem on Epic 6K Dragon just for photographers!!!!!

Thanks, again and again.

Buon anno a Jim, Jarred, Ted, Graeme, Brent and all of you guys.
