  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

Extremely impressive, more than expected (again). Congratulations, this is more than huge, can't find enough words to describe it. *mindblowing*
And my deepest thank you for offering a upgrade-path to EPIC, yes i'm doing backflips because of this. I always knew it was the right decision to invest in RED.

Sending back my Scarlet will be tearful, hehe, this was the camera i desired for so long, it became more than just a camera for me and it was more than worth the wait. Hell, i still love it every day i use it. :)

Have a happy new year! What a great way to start 2013.

Again, thank you very much!!!

Colour doesn't work that way Peter. There's no loss in colour, no gradual change until you hit clipping. It's binary in effect.
For me, the worst weakest aspect of digital cameras over film is the ugly yellow peaking that occurs when the red channel clips first. Might that not be lessened with increased headroom?

Cheers.

Scarlet users should be doing backflips :) It has been one of the biggest requests from Scarlet owners to be able to trade up to an Epic.. and that was before we knew just how significant Dragon has become :)
I am! Never doubted you guys for a second.
Actually this is exactly what I wanted.
Thanks soooo much Jarred!

I am waiting for the Dragon sensor.
However, this year is the year of the Snake, and the year of the Dragon is last year.
Does it rename in a Snake sensor? ;)

Great technological achievement. Congratulations to the whole team.
Hats off.

Global Shutter creates foundational problems in other aspects of sensor design.... as much as everyone thinks they want a global shutter they really just want the side-effects. We took things to a whole different level.

Seems like you guys tackled quite a few challenges. Pretty major ones.
The look of motion, and the lack of natural motion blur falloff is another one.

Happy and successful new trip around the Sun to the whole "out of the box" thinking crew...

Red Team.

Seriously a very big well done on what is going to put your company into college text books for years to come..

On a practical note. I'm only able to afford a basic $17000 Scarlet setup. I will not be able to afford a dragon Epic upgrade as i prefer to pay for it upfront and not owe a credit card company!! So are there any elements of what youve created that might end up in a Scalet update anytime soon? Even 24/25fps at 5k will be fine for me!
Again, proud and overwelmed...

it is more than any film stock we have ever seen and certainly more than any digital sensor known to man. This is meaningful. :-)

Jim

Very significant and VERY exciting.

Amazing to me how far RED has come in such a crazy short period of time. It really is one for the books.

Congrats and Happy New Year to everyone on the sensor team - and everyone at RED - best put your helmets on now .... I imagine the demand and pressure to ship will be .... meaningful :)

Happy New Year to all the Red family.
Can you estimate the signal to noise ratio of the Dragon.

Scarlets bought as Battle tested units will have the same chance to upgrade to Dragon? Of course according to the list and trade program.

Happy New Year to all the Red family.
Can you estimate the signal to noise ratio of the Dragon.

Id like to know a figure too but Im not sure its as straitforward an answer as I believe it depends on how you choose to expose the sensor in relation to your clip level and the DR you choose for highlights. Id recon with Dragon it just got a good deal better though.

Can't begin to express to the Red team how happy I was to have made the calculated decision to invest in Red...having first purchased my R1 then two Epic M's. Upgrading sensors, functionality, improving on the software tools -all of it is a customer's dream.

Tantalize us with more -but first make sure you raise a glass for all the hard work everyone's been doing...and then get back to work dammit!

This. Is. Awesome.

Once I have the cash for a ticket I'll ride this upgrade train. Congrats to your team at RDC, Jim. The line between film, 'filmic', and digital is vastly becoming a moot issue. Goodbye film cameras, hello cinema cameras.

Will the monochrome Epics be upgradeable to monochrome Dragon?

... once again i can feel, we "redusers" are a kind of vip customers.

changing over from a "sensor upgrade" to a "trade in" model is soooooo great !!!

this is a kind of service i never have seen at sony, canon, arri and all the other "big" players, whenever they made a big step forward and did any improvement on their products...

what is happening at red degrades all the customers of canon, sony, arri etc. to dumb mass customers...

jim, jarred, and everyone who is in your team: you are special.
red is special.
and you have shown not just one time: we are special.

once again: i'm glad that i joined the red family again...
best wishes for 2k13, prosit

Since the Epic needs more then just a sensor swap in hardware for upgrade path to dragon, will you put out a new camera brain that is cheaper to get the dragon sensor? I can't wait for a few years when I can afford these amazing cameras.

Heh heh. Screw them all :)

Just kidding. Quite honestly we deserve some of the slack that we get.

Remember we have only been making cameras for a few years now... and we have made some mistakes a along the way. Some of the bits in the very first round of our accessories.. That fucking mini hd-sdi... o my, we have a healthy list of sidesteps that seemed like such a great idea at the time. No wonder we pissed some people off along the way :)

But we learn.... listen to you guys, and ourselves.. and we move forward.

For all those out there that don't like some piece of what we do.. just tell them to give us some time. Tell them to take a second look if it's been awhile. We likely will get to where they want to be. We will continue to push things forward to the very bleeding edge as long as you guys are happy to stick around for the ride. We have been building a library of technology over that last few years that you are just beginning to see a sliver of. If you think Dragon is impressive.. just wait.

Speaking of which.. a ton of credit needs to go to our engineers ( and their families that we stole them from).

You know Graeme, and Rob, but there is also a whole team of software and hardware and sensor gods that work tirelessly in the background, writing code, pushing buttons, inventing.. taking huge risks solving impossible problems, Listening to Jim or my crazy ideas and then watching us have temper tantrums because something isn't working.

But they always dig down and come back up completely exceeding any expectations.

Making this stuff isn't easy. It is relentless. This is 18 hours a day , holidays and weekends , don't-go-home-till-it-is-done kind of work. .. it has been that way since we began.

I'm not a religious man but God bless our engineers.. and for all of you out there still with a drink in your hand tonight raise it and give them a nod.

They deserve it.

This is one of my favorite posts ever.
