  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

Holy Shit..... AAAAND....

Is it me or does Middle grey seem to fall somewhere around chip 10 or 11. This means there is more range up top.... THATS THE HOLY GRAIL. Thats the GODDAMN Film look. Holding more over than under....

I have no doubt this will be a game-changer and will raise the bar for the industry. I'll be interested to see how this will affect the gamma settings, current Red color science, rolling shutter issues, and other factors.

The sensor comes surrounded with a whole bunch of new tech that will raise the bar in far more than just DR...

Think about this for a second....

Most companies are still trying to catch up to the Red One MX! And Red now has two Epic cameras superior to that system along with Dragon that simply laps everyone by a couple years!!!!

Insanse in the membrane, insane in the Red camera brain!!!!

Light field technology (some day) and whatever else your mad geniuses have cooking up at RED 51 ;-)

Jim and Jarred... Simply and truly amazing what you guys have, are pulling off with Dragon!!

Price increase on upgrade was coming, and of course understood, can't wait for that email offering to receive M8 for the "All mighty Dragon upgrade"!!

Till then, a very HAPPY NEW YEAR to all 2 RED!!

This is beyond incredible. I personally cannot wait for this years bombshells to start falling! Meizler first, then Dragon... how the hell are we supposed to sleep with these revelations coming down the pipe? As if Epic wasn't an answer to our prayers already, but Dragon and the Meizler module make it truly the single most mind boggling system ever IMO.

Happy New Year Red team and forum peeps!

This is incredible! Can't wait to upgrade.
Looking forward to some "real" images.

Happy New Year RED!

The ONLY holdout out spec that I'm curious with Dragon is its rolling shutter response. Although greatly improved on the Epic with the MX sensor, I'm still hoping for even more improvement... I'm not expecting a global shutter... That's not a realistic expectation with the Dragon sensor tipping the scales at 6K, but any further gains certainly will be a boon. There still are instances when the rolling shutter/read-reset time bites me in the ass.

I should add, this is not something film ever did. Never like this. We're past that now.

Well said, Phil. This is uncharted territory. Al land celluloid was never able to tread. This isn't even landing on the moon. This is landing on Mars.

Lets see how long it takes Arri and Sony to come up with some baloney and say that 20 stops of DR isn't necessary, etc... RED has just bested their very finest and at a time where they're just starting to adopt 4K which RED did 5 years ago...

Actually, what we are going to start hearing is that 20 stops is TOO MUCH. Only to have them do an about face and join the 20DR party in 2020.

Dragon now claims to approach the tech specs I have been wondering for a while that will be the settling point.

24bit lin recording (with overhead, no cheating, just "have it all") to a 16bit float or 24 bit lin format.

If we add the capacity of 2:1 compression (even if that demands "gold" colored ssd's and a "gold" ssd recorder), and processing overhead in the asics, even for scenes that challenge the compression technique, Dragon will be in for a long and brutal ride.

But these new specs make me guess once over, that there will be two lines of cameras...
Epic Dragon/the upgrade.
"Dragon unbound" which will take into considerations some of the issues people have had with the Epic. Basically a cam with qthe Meizler module built in which ballances well on a shoulder rig with straight primes and small zooms. + the option of 4k monitoring, as I cannot see Jim taking lightly on THAT challenge from Sony. Something with bragging rights involved here... It could also be dubbed "the rental business cam".
It would be very nice to have some way to optically controll where the stops fall. I am not particularily looking for a 2000 iso cam, but a 16+ stops cam at 200 iso, would've been lovely. ND's bring distortion, too... And a native 4:3 sensor in that "studio" cam, wouldn't hurt for stills and anamorph, either.

But what do I know, other than I welcome all this.
