  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

This is the equivalent to HDRx +5. Native. I guess we just obsoleted HDRx. Oh, well. Progress.

Jim

No, you haven't :)

Considering that you may be approaching the dynamic range of the lenses, HDRx can be still useful. You see, HDRx can give you dynamic range far exeeding and not limited by the dynamic range of the glass.

Sorry Jim, but it's hard to talk when...

Any update on IR pollution. Thats something that needs to be sorted, just saying.

Gandhi said "BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD"

RED says "DRAGON"

I'm not quite sure if everyone fully understands what this actually means. This is the 1st time in history that a digital sensor blows away the dynamic range of film... and at a resolution that rivals 65mm. Couple that with 80+ fps at full resolution. Of course you can shoot lower resolution at higher frame rates. Record to a small SSD. REDCODE. Dragon. RED.

Jim

No no no... we understand what this means. Our brains are simply not functioning and imploding because of the magnitude of this all... (and recovering from NYE)

Are we still talking about a 2000ISO being native, Jim?

Just wanted to pitch in and offer my congratulations on again changing the imaging status quo. The 'competition' seems even more inept at this point.
As a proud Scarlet owner, I couldn't be happier with this announcement and cannot wait for upcoming announcements on the trade-in. Thank you for everything, and primarily for fearlessly pushing the envelope beyond all expectations.

I'm very excited but just to clarify something: the chart shows 20 or 21 stops of DR yet Jim just said it will have about 4 stops more than MX chip. The MX chip by most accounts has anywhere from 12-13 some odd stops so 4 over that would be 16-17. So where is the discrepancy? Is the chart showing something that won't eventually be there?

I don't think there is anything left in the "native ISO" thinking. You can shoot ISO 100 to 12,800 depending on how much noise you can tolerate.

I think "ideal" will be somewhere between ISO 400 and 2000.

Conservative... and I think the chart shows 18+ stops. But remember we still have a lot to go in calibration and color science.

Amazing, I can't wait.
congrats and happy new year to all

Although I hope you do still keep the HDRX system in place. If not for extended DR, then for secondary track info with sharper exposure/ slower shutter -- very handy for FX work, stills extraction, etc.. Just sayin' :)

Jim, you just nearly made me cry. A cameraman's dream.

I have been wishing for so long to be able to shoot at 100ISO... this is WONDERFUL.

Thankyou, and happy new year to you too!

This is what people are doing. They're looking at the chart as gospel, when it was said in the OP that there are factors missing in terms of how the image was achieved. Wait till all the processing, black calibration, etc. is done. My FB and Twitter is going bonkers with hype about 20-21 stops of usable DR with Dragon. That's not going to be the case, but obviously the sensor is going to be fantastic anyway even if it only did 15 solid usable stops it's in ALEXA territory which is great for everyone. I'm sure it'll be a little better then that.

The fact their sensor could record that much at all is AMAZING, so I don't want somebody coming on here crapping all over me.

There's a reason they didn't officially announce a usable DR value yet...calm down folks. It's amazing, it truly is, but don't look at that chart wrongly, it only creates false hype and eventual disappointment that shouldn't even be there to begin with.

Thanks for all the hard work RED! I'm not yet a convert due to various factors, money, etc. but maybe someday :)

EDIT: Jim already stepped in while I was posting my post. Thanks for the clarification Jim.

Happy New Years everyone!

Jarred.

This is not the last day of the Dragon, the Chinese year ends FEB 9th.

You could still release the Dragon in the year of it!

So on the last day of the year of the Dragon

I'm not sure where the 21 stops came from but clearly we see a usable 18+ stops of dynamic range. Maybe more given some tweaking. In any event, it is more than any film stock we have ever seen and certainly more than any digital sensor known to man. This is meaningful. :-)

I love this it is late DEC 31st OR already JAN 1st and we are all here talking about this exciting results on Dragon - Would not changed it for anything!

Is the mysterium epic going to stick around once this is shipping? Or will epic become dragon only? If there is a mysterium epic, would the pricing stay the same?
