  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Elite Optica Digital Super 35mm Lenses

Anybody who's already got their camera willing / interested in a "group test drive," with both qualitative and quantitative (well, charts and such) results posted back to the forum? Split the rental cost between everyone - I'd be willing to chip in some $$ to see these up against some other lenses (particularly the Red 18-50).

I will be testing them on RED, against COOKE and ULTRA etc next week - already tested them against each other on film, were they do fine. Will see if I can get hold of a RED lens.

They're just very different lenses to RED.

I think you will find that some of the Elites have higher resolution than some of the S4s when stopped down to 2,8-4.(I know this)
And I also think you will find an empty bank account after you bought 3 Masterprimes and still have some money left after buying 12 Elites ;-)

How do the opticas function at the wide end of the aperture? They are 1.3 lenses as I understand it. Are they sharp when in this area?

I shot a commercial last week wide open on S35 and it looked great in 2K
I will do some tests on a Leica w PLmount early this week and we will see..
However the 1,3 can be a lifesaver over the Cookes 2 if u run out of dayligth.

They're softer when wide open, of course. Nothing most people will notice though. Personally i like it. It's hard to say what COOKE would be like if they could open one more stop. The Elites becomes very comparable with COOKE S4's at T2 and definitely are equal at 2,8.

So that leaves me wondering if a COOKE would be equally soft if opened another stop?

As for mechanics I wouldn't worry about the Elites, they're very nice. Not as good as a Master Prime or a COOKE S4, but the difference is microscopical, especially considering the price. I've yet to see an AC that would complain about them and don't think there ever will be one.

Thanks, fred - great to hear. Be great if you could post some charts & some comparison shots, etc. Maybe a rack-focus clip to compare breathing. (Just suggestions.)

I'd still be up for contributing to a group test stateside, if there's interest. Two sets of opinions are better than one.

Was thinking more of the zoom vs. the Red zoom... (But how do you mean?)

Car deal

Car deal

True  but I've own two cars. A 1973 stingray big block (silver metallic) and a Porsche 911 Turbo. What are you driving my friend? :bleh:

Since the Danish Tax on cars are 180% (no kidding), you buy 3 cars and get one, we can only afford bicycles! Maybe we can make a bulk deal with Porche...

If we can get it for Swedish prices then I'm in :innocent:

On a side note - I've tried e-mailing Optika-Elite, but the e-mail bounces. Anyone who have e-mailed successfully with them?

I think you will find the Zeiss and Cooke lenses to be of much higher quality, optically and especially mechanically.

our zeiss, arri masterprimes and our cookes are not able to resolve 4K without c/a and many other issues, even at T>4.

doublechecked in late sept/okt 2007. look for the testshots we have published, we have uploaded some examples.
