  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Element's new HYBRID Sneak Peak

I don't know if it'll fit a 35mm camera as I tried using the RED ET 19mm base plate on a 35-3 and it's way off. We tried using 2 different matteboxes and it's pretty far off. I'm wondering if this plate will solve that problem so that I can use my RED plate and MB18 on a 35-3 as well.

Yeah... The old levers could potentially wear down over time and have limited tightening range....

Just isn't the case Jeff.
If you look on the existing base plates, you'll see two 5/64 hex screws providing end of play barriers.
Having problems with wear (loosening) or it's too tight?....simply remove these screws, adjust the locking nut, then replace them. Too easy!

That's what they're there for....too prevent over tightning and excessive wear on plate or rods.
Hey, you can even replace the locking nut & screws with a Kipp screw if you're bothered.
But i suspect you'll get more wear/tear from the Kipp screws as ham fisted assistants forget it doesn't take 2000 Nm to tighten the rods.

I guess this is why the 19mm base plate has been backordered for so long.....

You might be able to get the Hybrid with the old style nuts, that's what the first prototypes used. Ask the ET guys if this is what you need, they will probably be able to set you up.

No info on the ET site. Any word on the release date and cost? I have an order in for the 19mm RED Bridge Plate...but like everyone else...am waiting endlessly for it to come off of back order.

I would like to cancel that order and get the Hybrid. ET...update please.

Thanks,

JEFF

The Hybrid is available now for purchase from Abel.

Thanks Mitch. I also called ET today and it is available through them; although it is not yet listed on the site. At present, it is only available as a telephone order.

Chris tells me that the unit will sell as either a 19mm, 15mm, or a 19/15 hybrid. You will need to specify when ordering.

I will be getting one tomorrow.

It is the last base plate you will need.

The last plate I will need will be when they add a quick release mechanism to this base plate.
Now they have removed the locking assembly from the rod assembly it 'looks' a reasonable straight forward design to add a combo quick release & locking assembly (for lateral adjustment) where they have the existing locking lever.
Similiar to a standard o'connor quick plate where the quick plate is replaced by the dovetail plate, but with a smaller locking mechanism.
kind of like depicted (badly) here......but instead of the old plate you'd use the new one.

Dave,

Dave,

Why would you mount it perpendicular like you show?

Mitch...when I said depicted badly I mean't it!!

The left photo is trying to show a scenario where a dovetail (shown upsidedown) would be fixed to a tripod or equivalent.
On top of that would be a ET base plate with a quick release mechanism.
The quick release plate in the photo is only for reference.
In reality it would be the ET base plate with quick release (as morphed in right photo) which could snap onto the topside of the dovetail.
I know I'm confusing the b'jesus out of it but I don't know Solidworks or similiar.

...Now, on to the new Hybrid Bridge Plate. We have now discontinued our old bridge plate design for the Red in favor of the new Hybrid design. The Hybrid is convertible between 15mm studio, 19mm studio, 15mm lightweight, and 5/8’’ Panavision support. All with the same bridge plate...The top of the bridge plate also has 3 sets of holes. One set is for 15mm studio, one is for 19mm studio, and the third can be used with Arri cameras (with a 2.5mm shim plate).

The new Hybrid will be available from Red or directly from Element Technica. It will be $900 for single format (15mm studio or 19mm studio) or $1,200 for dual format (15mm studio and 19mm studio). The lightweight 15mm clamps will cost $275 and fit onto the front of the 15mm or 19mm studio clamps...

Hi Chris Burket

So if I have a 19mm baseplate on backorder with RED, I will now receive a single format 19mm studio Hybrid?

Is the single format Hybrid upgradeable to the dual format at a later date (if so, how much?), or would I have to order the dual format from the start?

How much is the Arri 2.5mm shim plate?

Thanks
Eric

Eric, yes, as per Big Jon's post that can be found here:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7464

All backorders will be fulfilled with the modular bridge plate design. To use the bridge plate with the 15mm studio or 15mm lightweight standard, you just need to get the 15mm clamps, or 15mm lightweight clamp. The 15mm studio clamps are $300 for a set of two. The 15mm lightweight clamp is $275.

The shim plate for use with Arri cameras and the 15mm lightweight clamp are not available yet. The price of the shim plate is TBD.

Thanks Chris

So just to be clear - the dual format Hybrid is basically the 19mm studio single format Hybrid with addition of a pair of 15mm studio clamps and/or a 15mm lightweight clamp?

Cheers
Eric

Hey Chris, just got your all's email today about the Hybrid and had a question. Do you have to have both the back and front spacing clamps on for it to work correctly? I would rather just buy the base and one spacing clamp since I don't see any need currently for the extra support-unless it's absolutely necessary for the design to work.

Am I correct in thinking that the 15mm LW needs to be attached to a 19 or 15mm studio clamp and can't be attached directly to the base?
Could you please post some pics of that setup once you get those LW modules in?

No, looking at the pics on the ET website you can see that is not the case, http://www.elementtechnica.com/hybrid/ . The 15mm LW attachs directly to the base plate, but if you want to run both types of rods you need the corresponding 15mm LW adaptor, because the plate is off center with 15mm studio setup.

Cheers,
Damien
