  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Element Technica's Red Accessories

Question as I am a noob when it comes to 19mm land...

If I want to keep with my 15mm accessories ff, mb, etc. is this the cheapest solution?

So far we have about four people interested in dovetails for the 1030hds. Anyone else that is interested please voice your opinion. Element is listening. They have many amazing products on the way and are listening closely just as Red is.

I've got a 1030b which is the same as the 1030hd but with grey paint. I'm interested if it's compatible.

I will also vote for a 1030 dovetail to arri dovetail plate.

Is there a standard length for an arri dovetail? I would think you would want this to be shorter than the 1060 2575 dovetail so that it would be lighter in weight.

All the Red Ninjas are talking about the 1030 and they seem to have a lot of experience with the camera, but it seems to me that the 2060 is the right fit. Could you comment on that, Brook or Evin? Have you had any issues with the camera payload being too heavy for the head? Obviously your lens plays a big part, but say you're using a prime lens, follow focus, and good sized matte box: what I would consider a standard setup.

1030HD notes

FWIW I picked up a 1030HD and love it. With the RED LCD, battery, rods, brackets, either shipping RED lens or various primes its just fine. However, due to the current limitation of only one monitor out hot at a time I have had to mount Panny and Marshall monitors with batts up high and then you need the 2060.

The 2060 is a fine option but the extra expense and weight put me off. If the client is renting mondo glass I just let them rent a bigger head.

One important note for those not familiar with the physics of tripod loading is that the capacity of the head is dramatically influenced by the height of the center of gravity. I am hopeful that ET does offer an Arri slide plate that would replace the small Euro QR plate on the 1030, I would then lose the RED shoulder dovetail which raises the camera about 2". I believe this lowering of the center of gravity will more than make up for the increased weight of the slide plate over the QR plate and provide a smooth adjustment. Of course, then you lose the quick shoulder to tripod and back advantage of RED's shoulder dovetail. YMMV.

On shows where we provide our own equipment, the 1030 is enough to handle the camera and all of the usual accessories. I've only overloaded one of our 1030 heads with gear that we own. It was a lower capacity 1030 with all of the camera trimmings [MB20, nearly every red accessory onboard, steel rods].

On larger shows, we usually go through a rental house. If we're renting gear, we're renting a few 2575 heads.

If I was buying a head for personal use, I'd probably go with a 1030... if only because we rent bigger boats for the bigger shows. I'd keep my package lighter and rent all the big guns when needed.

If I was buying a head for personal use with money to burn, I'd skip it all and buy my own 2575. And a 24-290 Optimo. And a set of Master Primes. And...

It'd be sweet if there was an 8", 10" and 12" dovetail. Anything over 12" is overkill for the 1030, though it may be useful on a 2060 with the mini euro. That would be a pretty specific setup for a longer lens though... maybe an 18" or 24" dovetail for a hubble zoom. Nonetheless, that's probably overkill [at least in the short term].

Hello everyone,

First of all thanks to everyone for the great information and feedback. Sounds like there is definately interest in an Arri dovetail with the 1030 interface on the bottom. I'll make sure is has threaded inserts so it will be compatible with even smaller heads
It looks like I will be able to start designing next week and I will try to make it as versatile as possible. If possible I will post some renders along the way if anyone is curious.

Also, WRT our new products. The Ultra Rods and Arri/OConnor dovetail are shipping now. Everything else (EVF mount, Break-Out box and top-plate and brackets) is coming together pretty quickly. They would be out now but there are a couple of twists coming which I think everyone will agree were worth the wait.
We're working on a few other things we're not ready to talk about but will post any new info on REDUSER first.

Keep bringing the feedback and suggestions.

Thanks for listening Stephen. I'm really liking this open-community development process. Pani and Sony could learn something from this.

Is anyone making the large dovetail that I can simply bolt to the top of my 1030 head? I like the extra sliding room.

Element Technica's RED EVF Bracket

Element Technica's RED EVF Bracket

Had the opportunity to test the RED EVF bracket from the boys at Element Technica - SWEET! The multiple adjustment capability and the clutch design worked beyond my expectations.

I used the bracket on a Tyler middle mount in a Hughes 500E for over 6 hours and it never so much as jiggled from what ever position I set it at - also on sticks the bracket was a dream to work with...and no I am not getting a free bracket - just sharing my field testing experience.

Placed my order - this is a must have. Now if they can only make one that is Sharky proof for underwater applications :-)

Looks pretty cool, can't wait to try one out myself.

I see I'm not the only one with CF rods.

2575's overkill. 2060's just right.
