You might want to take a look at Element Technica's products - In some ways It's a bit more of a film camera approach. Mostly built around 15mm rods which are more standard in some towns than 19mm. Element is the Red Accessory division of SL Cine.

We were treated to a preview last weekend, here's a few highligths...

-Red Top Plate - holds battery / handle / evf mount one piece with lots of holes for expansion / invention.

-15mm arri base and dovetail - you can see the 15mm base on Red's website. the dovetail fits directly into the o'conner head. This gives you a very steady base and compatible with many industry standard

-Mini Din Output converter - bolts onto the camera right side to make all those mini DIN's into full sized BNC connectors, with the cables headed towards the rear of the camera as opposed to the side.

-EVF Swivel. Makes EVF work like a film camera's viewfinder, rugged. Lockable clutch allows fluid movement in the rotational axis. Easy adjustment for / aft and up/down.

-Nickel plated Alluminum Alloy Rods in 15mm and 19mm. Light and Tough !

-Handle system - did not see much of this. Uses rosettes.

Not much is viewable on line but more will be soon. Maybe if there is enought of an outcry they will post some pictures!

I don't work for Element, but I have given them feedback on some of their designs.

Hi Matt,

I see Element is selling mounts and adapters, do you know anything about those?

thanks,

Any idea on when the one piece top plate might be available?

And does it provide a connection for the battery or just hold the battery plate?

Their breakout box is the sort of stuff that dreams are made of. The very first night I got my hands on the camera I started dreaming of a little breakout box that clicks onto the side of the camera in the way that theirs does. It's exactly what I had in mind... almost every camera owner will want one of these.

Their EVF bracket is pretty great too... I'm quite excited to see the final unit. It's settled most of my concerns about the EVF [which were largely surrounding the little RED ARM as support].

Hi Brook,

Does their EVF bracket have a clutching action to it. Like what you would want if using a gear head with a leveling rod.

thanks,

oops,, never mind I just reread Matts post.

The Element Technica equipment is high quality cine gear. I can not recomend them for a red camera enough. It has the form, function, finish and durrability I have come to expect from film gear. My camera will be decked out the element technica gear as it is simple but still offers all that most will need to configure the camera in a cine manner.

Stephen was great to talk to and we spoke in detail about a few changes and options that would make the system even better so hopefully they come through. The top plate, 15mm arri base plate, BNC breakout box and EVF swivel (with hopefully an extension eyepiece option with leveling rod) will all be vital items for the function and ease of use for my camera. Like I said I can not recomend these guys higher so check them out as they will be a key factor for your camera working best in a cine environment.

I have been emailing back and forth a bit with Stephen and I am very excited about the products they are working on. I plan on building a fully tricked out handheld system with mostly Element products for my Red.

Yes. It's quite nicely done, good fluidness and good locking. I think it's going to pretty much be a must have for EVF users. The EVF is quite big and heavy - think of a 16 oz can of beer ( not that I know anything about big cans of beer ).

Their 19mm Arri Base Plate is awesome...it has replased the RED base on my camera. I also ordered all their other components. The EVF mount looks very promising, and the rods are nearly 60% lighter that the steel rods.

Yeah I just reread your original post as you were writing this.
Thank you for the reply.

WANT. Pictures please!

We can't post photos... the EVF bracket we got our hands on was very much a prototype and the breakout box was non-functioning. The other parts were render photos only and the aluminum rods look just like steel rods.

Maybe Stephen will post some renders or photos? The new parts are WAY cool. I've been nothing but impressed by their stuff.

So what are the advantages to the -15mm Arri base and dovetail over the standard Red base and tail? Other than it being adapted to 15mm rods.

Also would Element Technica's Arri base work with other standard tripods?

The 15mm and 19mm Arri Base allow those of us with Arri accessories to use them on our Red. You can use other tripods, but its really best for use with an Arri dovetail as it lowers the center of gravity. Also if you have the newer OConnor 2060 or 2575 you can also order ET's Arri dovetail which fits directly on the Oconnor and the Arri Base plate just slides on (see pics)
