I would like to get a better monitor for on-set and studio use than the one I have right now, but also don't want to spend too much with 4K monitors right around the corner.

I've read a lot of the threads here, and occasionally I see Eizo ColorEdge monitors mentioned. I like the idea of having the built-in calibration, but I also see its for Adobe RGB and sRGB with no mention of Rec709 or any other video standard. All Eizo really mentions on their website is photos and print.

Are these Eizos actually okay for critical color correction of video? I would be feeding from a Blackmagic Design output card or device for use in Resolve, FCPX, Avid, And Premiere, as well as hook up as a 2nd monitor for RedCine-X Pro.

Hey Mike,
I have an Eizo FlexScan SX2462W, which I did get mainly for photographic print work and also editing DSLR footage. I have now made the jump to RED, so I am also interested in this.
My monitor doesn't have the built in calibration, but I got the Eizo spider for it and it works okay.
You are right, the EIZO EasyPIX software has Adobe RGB and sRGB gamut settings along with 'monitor native' which seems to have a similar scope to Adobe RGB. You can also adjust the colour temp and gamma settings manually. It also gives the option to go in and do fine adjustments to the colour (but I leave that well alone).

As far as I understand sRGB uses the same primaries and gamma as Rec. 709. So... (and if anyone wants to chime in here) if we calibrate to sRGB we shouldn't go to far wrong?
On a different note, I found that the Eizo software needs to run a rolled back version of Adobe Air to operate! I found one in the end, but it wasnt easy.

Hope this helps in some way.

you need the Eizo CG245 or CG232 ( sdi version) or even better the new CG246 to have the REC709 and EBU colorspaces.
The CG246 has also hdmi input. To connect to sdi, add a sdi-hdmi/dvi convertor as the hdlink pro. The CG245 and CG246 match nicely.
The hdlink pro is not good for field monitoring, but works nice in

For field monitoring, where also audio (re)playback is sometimes needed, i would use a relatieve cheap HP ZR2440 which supports the 'odd' 1080p25/p24 framerates of the RED Epic and Scarlet, connect it with a Hyperdeck Shuttle2, only 50 euro's more expensive than a standard sdi-hdmi convertor and you have even recording build-in. For limited audio playback, add a HP LCD Speaker Bar

I am in the same boat. I know EIZO's are good monitors ... they have a 4K monitor that I saw at NAB ... about $35,000.00! We have three (3) ageing Dells and we also have a 27" NEC Multisync that we use in our fine art printing business. We have had good luck with it. We have been looking at the 30" NEC PA301W-BK-R. The Spectraview calibration software is extra (an $89.00 download ... and we already have our own calibration puck). Supposedly, between the optional Spectraview calibration software and the included Multiprofiler software, the monitor can be calibrated to Rec 709 color space. (How good it actually is ... I don't know.) Obviously there is no SDI in. We would be feeding it from our Kona 3 through an AJA SDI to DVI-D converter. The other alternative I suppose would be to look for an older Sony PVM or BVM CRT monitor-w-SDI (you might be able to find one a decent price as long as it isn't too thrashed or burned in) and then hope that you can find someone to calibrate it.

My Eizo is only showing 8 bit for the Linux flame trough the DVI port if Im not mistaken. But thats maybe just so because it's a few years old or due to the DVI port. Or?

You have to use the DisplayPort input to get 10-bit. This requires the Blackmagic Design HDLink Pro 3D, which has SDI in and DisplayPort out and will maintain the 10-bit signal. They're about $500 though, so it adds to the cost of the monitor and makes me wonder if there's a better solution for the money since it's all approaching $3000 at that point.
