  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EF-S and 5K

Since we don't currently know EPIC-S's pricing, there's a chance that there might be a lot of people who can somehow manage to scrap the necessary dough to get the most basic shooting package.

This crowd will surely shoot with SLR lenses.

Considering I've either shot or been on 5 features (a couple with reasonable budgets) and used RED with SLR lenses for all of them it's safe to say I'll be one.

The last movie I worked on had a moving shot EVERY shot. We pretty much maxed out the capability of the system. Steadicam, jib, dolly, handheld, a lot of F2 stuff. Yeah... there were a lot of buttpucker focus moments. We stayed mostly on primes which behave better than that zoom for focus.

The image on the 17-55 EF-S is amazing. The mechanical build is not as good as the L primes. Too bad, cause it's a killer little zoom. It's usable, but you'll get dust in it and the focus system is known to fail. I've got two here and both really need repair to be 100%.

The 70-200 2.8 IS is a great lens. It breathes some, but it's terrific for the size. The IS on the Birger is nice. Looking forward to RED's mount on EPIC.

Tokina 11-16 is a great wide.

Hm, so far there hasn't been a solid answer wether or not EF-S lenses will work on RED's Canon mount.

The only reason I'm really interested in this is because of these two lenses, the 17-55 and the Tokina 11-16.

Apparently they do cover the image circle, but do they mount?

That's what I want to know. I am interested in using the Canon EF-S 17-55 with the Epic-S until I can afford the Red Pro 17-50 later in the year. I'm sure RED will add support in some way for the EF-S line. It would be nice if someone from RED can confirm this.
And yes, as you can see from below, the Epic-S sensor barely fits on top of a full frame image with the EF-S 17-55. You may get some vignetting at 5K though... at 4k there should be no issues.

actually I really should have named the thread "5k and 17-55/2.8" not "5k and efs" because nearly all the other ef-s lenses are very very sub-par.

From what I've seen the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is just as sharp as L lenses. The optical quality is excellent. For only $900, you can't go wrong. But yeah, just about all other efs lenses are pretty bad!

Hey Andrew, that image circle you posted, does it change diameter at different focal lengths? Like smallest when it is at its shortest focal length?
