  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Editing Chair...

Interesting, I had just recently switched my workstation over to a standing setup. Its temporary for now, using a load of apple boxes to raise the monitors and keyboard up. I love it. But I do agree that a hybrid approach would be the best, as in the afternoon I would be leaning on the desk a little too much. I am moving to a different office next week, and I am going to look at getting a motorized frame for my desktop, and a barstool sort of chair with a foot rest on it. I've found that my knees need to be below my hips as much as possible or things get really uncomfortable quickly.

I am sitting in an aeron chair right now, and its OK, but my desk isn't high enough to raise the chair up enough to get my knees below my hips.

I think the motorized adjustable desk along with a good barstool type chair to use once in a while is a good thing. The key is to not lock yourself in one position for too long. I get out of my room at least once an hour and take a couple laps around the office, just to keep moving. Remember, sitting is the new smoking.

Also, remember that the aeron chairs don't have the effective built in muffler for when the "all you can eat burrito buffet" that you had for lunch starts to kick in. Minor point, but hey, reality stinks.

All of it is personal preference.

I sat in the Aeron and the plastic edge under my legs hurt. Maybe it was the adjustment/sizing as others have mentioned

I ended up purchasing the Embody. The back support is incredible and it looks really cool at your desk (because we all know looks are what matter after long hours of editing :) )

But...after a while i started noticing that the seat cushion area was starting to hurt my bottom and lower back. It's very springy...but its not soft at all. Its actually deceivingly firm or at least mine is. I liken it to when people love to sleep on FIRM beds. They like the support. I ended up having to put a memory foam 2 inch cushion down on it. Not optimal for a 1200 dollar chair.

It might just be me though. I own an Eames lounge chair that i don't find particularly comfortable after a while of sitting.

If i had it to do over i would probably go for a Humanscale Freedom chair... or the Leap or Gesture from Steelcase.

Check out Lifeform if you have a Relax The Back Store near you http://www.relaxtheback.com/ergonomic-chairs/brezza-office-chair.html
Ridiculously comfortable and but ridiculously overpriced too.

Old thread. I have since moved from my failing Aeron chair over to a HumanScale Freedom chair with the gel seat. Overall I like it better than the Aeron, but there are some down sides to it. Took me quite a while to decide between this chair and the Embody. I've sat in an Aeron for the better part of 15 years and I'm just done with them. Can't complain though. I've personally owned two of them and they last for years. My wife recently got a Herman Miller Mirra chair, well almost 2 years ago, and she loves it. Likes it more than the Aeron. And I think I do too -- the seat is more comfortable and the arms quickly drop out of the way, same with my Freedom chair. I've had it about 18 months. The gel seat is nice once it warms up and softens, but it lacks the free flowing air ventilation of the Herman Miller chairs.

I think it's all personal preference and how these chairs fit you. Try them out and take your time. Don't skimp on the chair. The $250 and cheaper crap from Office Depot or similar retailers are pure garbage. First of all, they most likely won't last anywhere near as long, so you'll end up paying just as much in the long run. And they're all using cheap crappy foam and materials and I'd rather sit on a wood stool most of the time.

I agree I have about 15 aeron chairs and had them since year 2000 If I would decide to sell them today I think I could probably get at least more than half of the money back... Thats something I think I can not say about anything else that I bought for my office and had for far less time. So if shit hits the fan and I go bankrupt I at least got some coins saved up in my chairs. Ikea chairs does not work the same way :)

+1 for HumanScale Freedom chair

Recently had the same exact issue, i keep being uncomfortable at my station, and keep breaking office chairs, I’m only 220 pounds but it seems everything is Chinese and of poor material quality these days, so I did embark on the search for the chair, got a new chair (fully metal assembly, chrome finish, hoping it won’t break) but also had a brilliant and certainly dumb idea: to search Google "how to sit in an office chair" yes its stupid, but, it came out with this link: http://www.wikihow.com/Sit-at-a-Computer which I found immensely useful to improve ergonomics tilting my monitors up 70° did it for me (tip included in the link provided) it helped me very much since I’m 6´3 and tend to slouch, now I’m sitting better and feeling less stressed from spending many hours a day at the workstation. Hope you find it useful!

I agree...I have about 20 in our studio...workhorses. Some are going on 10 years old and are in great shape despite the daily abuse they receive. You get what you pay for, and in the case of the Aeron...you get more. Ive bought cheaper Office Depot chairs on several occasions to save money...but in fact they cost more. They last less than 2 years. I would have gone thru 5 Office Depot chairs in the past 10 years for one Aeron...which is still rock solid and worth more used than just one brand new Office Depot chair.

Spend the money on a good chair...it pays you back!
