I'm in Houston right now shooting a gig for Showtime and didn't have time to bring my mic and A-box for the epic. We are shooting separate audio anyway but without a slate, it's going to be tough for the editor to sync sound. So I remembered that headphones could act as a crappy mic when need be... I busted out my iPod headphones and viola, instant scratch mic.

Is there a little button mic that works ? I don't understand how the audio signals on the epic are wired, but none of my mic's work but the headphones do ! The Abox looks cool, but I really just want a tiny cheapie mic that will give me some scratch track.

Nice! Perfect small solution for scratch audio. How does it sound?

Ha! Perfect! I will hunt one of these down soon for scratch audio. I have a Zoom H4n audio recorder which works fine as well, but for lightweight shooting that little Sony mic looks like a very elegant solution :)

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

Amazon shows the Sony ECM-DS30P as weighing 1.85 lbs. Is that true? If so, that's almost half of what the Epic body weighs.

Here's the manual: http://www.radioshack.com/graphics/uc/rsk/Support/ProductManuals/55032938_PM_EN.pdf

It's 17 grams. BUT now I'm totally confused as to why it works at all. It's a stereo mic that requires power through the plug. Deanan said in another thread that phantom power is currently disabled. And I'm sure a standard stereo mic shouldn't work in a trs because of the way they are wired.

I don't get how the Sony stereo mic receives power and delivers a stereo signal through a 3-contact plug, either. So whatever the formula, in this case it looks like two wrongs make a right? Can anyone explain? When the headphones or the ECM-DS30P work, is the audio input on Epic is set to balanced or unbalanced?

That makes a lot more sense, vis a vis the weight. Amazon probably mistakenly listed that weight for a combo purchase. I also thought some Epic M owners were unable to get this mike to work because the input is mono. Just wondering if there is some difference between the X and M in regards to input?

Tonaci,

Have you used this mic and does it work on the EPIC X? If it is a stereo Mic, how does it record on the one mic input? Mono or Stereo?

I bought the Sony mic when I saw Tonaci's post, however it's presently unusable because it requires phantom power. There is a signal, but too noisy to be of any use. I imagine that power was available when Tonaci got his but it is disabled in current firmware. It will be enabled (re-enabled) in the future. Also, the only input options at present are unbalanced or off.

Hi, sorry to revive an old thread but I am searching for tiny scratch audio solution myself. So, if Sony ECM-DS30P does not work on Epic/Scarlet, are there any alternatives of comparable size that do work?

Thanks,
Kamilla

Too low even for post synching?
