  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello

Anyone else experiencing DVR crashing with 8k raw r3d files? Even one clip on the timeline, still crashes. My machine is very fast, with 64gb of ram. Also an 6gb video card. Any ideas?

thanks!

- dual Quadro P6000 (24gig of Vram each)
- source cache

source cacheing is cheaper

64 gig of system is not all that much, i see Resolve using 70+ gig at times..... i have 96g in one machine and 128g in the other

Vram is a concern as well, 6gig @ 8k scales to 1.5gig @ 4k, and 256meg @ HD

2gig is minimum recomended for HD, scale that to 4k and you want 8 gig, scale that again to 8k and you want 32gig, so dual P6000's are about the only choice, Baselight uses 7 x p6000's for 8k

Chris, why don't you dropbox an r3d and we try it out on our systems?

Dermot is correct: 8K playback would almost definitely require multiple Nvidia Quadro P6000s. Last I checked those were about $4000 each. Of course, you'd also need a motherboard capable of supporting up to 8 of these cards, which are pretty thick and need lots of power.

Hey guys, thanks for helping.

Here are my machine specs

Windows 10 64bit
Intel Sky Lake 4ghz 6700 chip
64gb of ddr4 ram
Nvidea card with 6gb vram
samsung SSD hard drives

I have my project in DVR set to 8192x4320. The playback is set to 1/16th for RED r3d. I drop one 15sec clip on the timeline and DVR crashes. I'm not even playing it. Is it a bug with DVR and these new 8k files?

Also note that RED cine X has no issues playing these files, of course the debayer setting is at 1/8 or less.

I tried to upload a clip to my google drive, it wont let me, too large.

to me the only setting acceptable is full premium, or in some cases half premium, no other setting counts as a valid choice for finishing / gradeing

i cannot speak to what it takes to run anything with the offline / low quality settings, i never use them, ever, never, ever....

BMD's recomandation for high resoultion workflow is dual 18 core + mutiple P6000's, the machine you are on is vastly underpowered for 8k, even for UHD it's under minimum spec, it's only really good for HD with full premium settings

best pratice is to set your timeline to the match the deliverables at full premium then you will know what the scaeling / sharpening / noise issues are and address them in context

I'm running Resolve on a similar machine, except with GTX 980 4GB.

It only runs R3D's quarter res realtime, so for grading R3D's need to be cached. However I can grade both HD and UHD (noise reduction has to be cached for UHD).

8k timeline will crash with helium footage right away...

Geese... ok. My decode setting is full premium, playback is 1/16th. I'll need to find a work-around. I'm delivering in UHD, not 8k. So perhaps I'll have redcinex convert it all for me. To build a machine that you are describing would be over 20k. Unless im looking at the wrong parts?

I'm running a 3 year old dual xeon 2.2GHZ e5-2660.

8K full res. I can render at around 10FPS. With a GTX 980 as UI card and a GTX Titan x 12GB as dedicated render card. If I take the Titan out of it with only the 980 it will do 1fps.

I've found that lowering the playback resolution does not help much. And in some instances it can actually slow down playback, lol!

I seem to recall seeing a million-dollar system trying to play 8K material in real time and crashing at a convention not too long ago...

You figure, eight Quadro M6000 GPUs would cost you $50K just for those. Add to that an external chassis to hold them, plus another case for the motherboard, 128GB of RAM, a large SSD as a boot drive, then 100TB or so of fast external storage... I think you'd hit over $80,000 very quickly, and that's without a control surface or monitor.

I normally agree with Dermot on just about everything (and he does great work), but I don't agree here. I've done 5K & 6K projects where we delivered 2K and 4K and just monitored everything in HD at 1/2-res or 1/4-res. It was fine. We are very aware of scaling artifacts and trying to judge sharpness and noise with scaled footage, so we proceed with caution there. Color, brightness, and contrast don't change, so the essential job is the same.

I do check the final renders pretty carefully and I will go back and redo certain shots if they're warrented, particularly if we went overboard with sharpening or NR. It's rare, but it happens.

I don't know a lot of places in LA that are routinely color-correcting in 4K with 4K & 5K Raw material, certainly not at an indie / commercial / episodic TV level. Anything can be done, given enough time and money. I think 8K is one of those things where most workflows are going to just transcode it early on and deal solely with the transcodes; the huge blockbuster features typically do that, using DNxHD for Avid editing and then DPX/EXR files for final color.

To answer your question, no not experiencing that, that isn't normal. With the latest DR your system shouldn't crash with Helium 8K, not at any resolution. My nMBP laptop can playback at 1/8th good at 24 fps just fine, and even at 8K full premium it can playback, just only at 2-3fps, but it doesn't crash.

My research shows the dual P6000s aren't completely necessary, I will be able to confirm later this week after my E5-2699 v4's and Titan XP's get here.

On a 8K timeline?

The latest Resolve Studio on Win10 crashes on my system with 7680X4320 timeline and Helium clips. No GPU warnings, it just vanishes...
