Nah, it was tax avoidance and greed. Same as most other places...America was founded on humanist and religious ideals that can be found in places like the writings of Aristotle and Plato and the books of the Bible.
The America Revolution was not fought so the Colonists could buy from the lowest cost producer.
The United States was founded on the ideal that there are certain rights every individual is born with and which no government should have the power to take away. Related to this is the rejection of the implicit and explicit justification of divine right for monarchy.
John Adams was the moving force behind Independence. While the founders were of varied religious backgrounds, Adams was a devoted Christian. It was his belief in a personal God that cares for each and every one of His creations that shaped his view on independence for the Colonies.
The Battle of Bunker Hill was America's Red One. Everyone was surprised at the victory by an utterly inexperienced army fighting against the British who were the most powerful and experienced force in the world. The rest of the Revolution was more like building Epic and Scarlet: delays, setbacks, spiraling costs, nay says and the designers working to the point of absolute physical and mental exhaustion.
But these efforts were never done to secure the right of North Americans two hundred and thirty-three years later to buy $39 DVD players made by slave labor living in "workers dorms" half way around the world on the outskirts of the most polluted city known to man. No, not Newark, Beijing.
The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, three equal but separate branches of government, democratic elections, these were not motivated by some inherent good of a person repeating the same task 18 hours a day and finally jumping off the factory roof so their family can get death benefits.
America was founded on humanist and religious ideals that can be found in places like the writings of Aristotle and Plato and the books of the Bible.
As far as the Capitalism Magazine article is
Not that I expect to get all teary eyed and stubbornly biased when it comes
time to choose my next camera, but outstanding qualities in both the
technology and its creators will play an important role in my decision making process.
So, let's put our childish notions of national morality and integrity and deities aside and agree that Jim is making a grand and important gesture in a country that has been brought to its knees because its democratically elected government failed to value the most basic principles of community etc. etc. etc..
I don't think this article said anything about buying American... and for all you "buzz-kill" guys, if somebody doesn't design, engineer and make something in the US... we are all in trouble. It would be sad, in my eyes, to see the US become a service only country.
Almost 90% of the sunglasses that Oakley sells are made in Foothill Ranch. And our current plan is to manufacture EPIC in the US.... completely. That doesn't mean that you need to buy one over a German or Japanese product... it just means that we believe in the capability for US companies to compete heads up with the rest of the world...
I don't read too much in this article more than an acknowledgment of our efforts to create jobs and do something important here in the US. Our customers will decide how well we did... not the press.
Jim
