  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dumbass question - no right side ribs? Cost cutting? Not crucial? I feel so dumb.

Won't be getting one soon, unless I sell a screenplay or win at a festival. In the meantime - no ribs on one side? Can't find explanation.

This is truly a tangental question, not a complaint. Just glad to be here.

Not a dumb question.

I think he's talking about the "Scarlet Tactical Ribcage Pack" here:
http://www.red.com/store/new-releases/product/scarlet-tactical-ribcage-pack

If that is the case, I think many who favor the DSMC Side Handle will likely not build out both ribs on the right side. I can see room for one rib, but you're going to want a nice clear path to that handle if that's your goal. I might do something very similar down the line.

Same idea for the "Scarlet Tactical Cage":

Very useful for Bomb EVF placement. Again if the Side Handle is your way of shooting, the right literally is in the way.

I think he was actually asking why the Scarlet design doesn't have the ribs on the brain like the Epic does. Probably thinking it's only one side since when the SSD is on the left side there ribs of some sort as part of that design I think.

Personally I assumed it was just a cost saving move, but would be interested in the "real" answer if its different.

That's what I'm talking about. Sorry for the confusion and melodrama. There are no right side ribs on the base Scarlet as opposed to the Epic. Supposedly it's Biblical? Ha ha?

...Thought it looked weird too when first saw it.
But the more stripped down and grey look grew on me..
It looks like a workhorse..nicks and scratches will only
enhance it's looks. In contrast Sony FS-100 looks like
the plug 'n play autopilot module to fly a 747..horrible.

Battleship grey and a square box is perfect..great bit of Industrial design.
If Epic is a slick black Porsche...Scarlet is a primered Rat Rod. Good Job.

But to answer your question more directly..I think ultimately the design look differences
between Epic and Scarlet is to just differentiate them so they can be recognized
from each other at a glance. Less confusion at rental houses and such.

I actually did ask a Red guy who showed the cameras at the announcement
if it had anything to do with cost and he did not think so either. Because they
are the same size and weight there just needed to be a way not to confuse them.

explanation is simple, you can have either one - side handle, or right side ribs, not both;
but I believe you can fit one even with side handle using tactical adapter mini - i'll try

Looking in the store it seems that the same side handle fits in the same opening on Epic and Scarlet. Epic has ribs on that side, Scarlet don't. Really, no big thing - just curious.

Don't know for a fact but assuming: Scarlet has lower data rates -> consumes less power -> generates less heat. (If you note in several postings there is mention of how the batteries will last longer per charge on a Scarlet than an EPIC; less power consumption).

The ribs provide cooling because the amount of cooling is directly related to the amount of surface area available to dissipate heat as air flows over the surface. Now the Ribs are built onto the surface of the side SSD; so one side can provide cooling and/or it means they don't have to manufacture two models of side SSD.

Note: this is probably why the top rear of the Scarlet is flat while the EPIC is slightly curved. Improved heat dissipation, and more air flow out the fan area.
