I wanted to highlight some of the shots we did on the Duclos 11-16mm.

Just FYI - I have no interest in the company, I bought my lens at full retail not even at a discount. But we are just so impressed with this lens on the EPIC - and it is so cheap and small that I figured other users might be interested in it.

So part of the story is just that this EPIC just seems to scream out for small lenses. Normally I like Primes, and we also shot with and loved the 12mm Master Prime 1.3 and the R8. But the 12mm is vastly bigger (great but huge) and the R8 is just wonderful but 10 times literally the price of the 11-16.

So anyway for what it is worth I figured I'd post some stills taken with that lens and I would be happy to answer any questions about it. I think small primes and converted PL mount lenses + canon mount lenses will be one of the more popular paths for many Scarlet and EPIC users.

We dont expect to ever play this clip this long (this is just rushes) - and I was trying to just have flare at the top of frame without 'washing' out the whole frame.

I assume the Duclos guys also read Reduser so they may be better placed than me to answer questions - especially regarding price or availability.

Awesome! Quick question; Does it vignette at all shooting at 5K and if yes at what focal length?

I also have the 11-16 and just love it...very compact lens ideally suited for the Epic. Side by side with our 12mm Ultra Prime, its a worthy competitor at a fraction of the cost.

I have noticed the 11-16 on many of your BTS shots Mike and it has been putting a smile on my face. I love my non-Duclos Canon mount Tokina.

Red said they already worked on the electronic control for it. I like the focus action on the stock lens already, especially considering the low cost of the lens without the Duclos conversion.
Now I am really hoping it pulls focus just as well or better electronically, then maybe I won't feel bad about not having a PL conversion with gears and a manual Iris. :crossing fingers:

Check out this new page at Duclos.com. I think the ones that already shipped need a small tweak and they are offering the service free of charge. That's good service.

the footage looks so surreal! the DR is so high, it's just weird for my brain to look at. great stuff, and the 11-16 is probably gonna be known down the line as a masterpiece lens, similar to what they did with the ruby zoom.

also can't wait for the duclos 70-200 he's working on. throw that on a epic... it's gonna be retarded sharp.

I shot with Tokina 11-16mm on RED1-M in April 2009 even long before Duclos decided to convert it to PL.

Shot handheld on RED1-M with Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 Nikon DX version mounted on IMS for RED.

So it shoots cleanly without any filtering. BUT we added various filters on the 11-16 at various times including
- ND
- Polar
- Variable ND

Now the 11-16 has a screw thread which is brilliant - you can mount an Polar without a matte box - which of course is a huge wind sail for chopper work... but once we added the screw in filter we could only go to 13 safely without seeing something in the edges... that being said - at 5K I could always safely crop !!!!

Personally I was happy to trade 11 to 13 for variable ND - it means very fast ND adjustment safely - or Polar which pinged our clouds out. I think Stu was the same - plus you know there is a school of thought that says ...almost any shot looks better with a vignette !!

I really love this lens and the Ruby.

I think they are both really are must have tools to have in your lenses tools box.

Really beautiful footage.

Congratulation.

the snow looks so good it looks fake. almost like a miniature , we're going to have to re adjust how we view this much detail

For my wide angle needs on Red One I've been using a stock Tokina 11-16 with Nikon mount and screw-on filters ever since the Tokina 11-16 lenses first shipped - for about 18 months now. The performance to price ratio of the lens is amazing...I love the lens :)

I haven't used a stock 11-16 on Epic M8 yet, because a PL mount is still the only mount available. When the Canon mount is available I'll be using my L series Canon zooms on Epic, but when the Nikon mount is ready, I'll also use my stock 11-16.

I'm sure the cinevised Duclos version is excellent for those who use PL mounts. Everything Duclos does is first rate. They have maintained several of my lenses for me - with great results and service.

With this very affordable Variable ND on top of a UV it still clears up to 12.5mm APS-C, with 13mm being very safe.
The downside to this low cost Variable ND is that the filter has a very slight green cast, though it is easily compensated for.

Don't quote me, but I am pretty sure you can also use any linear pola of your choice + step-up ring (to clear FOV on the next filter) + larger rotating linear pola.
That should give you the same as a "Variable ND". Haven't tried it. Light loss would be from 1 stop up to several stops at the darkest end.

Knowing that the lens itself covers 5k WFO is great news for everyone. Of course having a PL version with gears and a manual iris means it will fit right into a cinematic workflow.

Thanks again Mike for all the very useful hands-on info.

I'm firmly in the EPIC + Canon EOS lens crowd for the time being. The variable ND will also be a must have tool for me.

I can't wait to shoot Epic with the 11-16! There's a good chance it will be the first lens I put on Epic when I get it. I love this lens and own both the Duclos conversion as well as the Nikon mount stock lens.

Most low-profile filters don't vignette on the lens, at least not shooting on APS-C DSLRs or the RED One. There's a possibility we could see a vignette at 4.8K 16:9 and the 5K modes on Epic with certain filters. But I'm thinking it will be OK with the right ones or using a step-up ring to put larger filters on.

Tokina really outdid themselves with this lens. The Duclos converted version is a wonderful companion to both the RPPs and the Angenieux DP "Rouge" zooms. My Nikon mount one sits proudly in line with my 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200. Which also stands to reason that the Duclos modded version would be a perfect companion to the Focus Optics Ruby 14-24 conversion.

The city wide shots, Bi-Plane, Skateboard and Dog done on Sam Druckerman's Epic used the Duclos 11-16. They looked Great @5k.

Hi Matt,

Which lenses did you use for those split focus shots? The Duclos 11-16 as well?

Hi Jeff,

The slant focus shots were done with a 45mm Hartblei Super Rotator.

It's a Medium format lens from Belorussia. Mine came in Pentacon 6 mount which can easily be changed to PL with an adapter.
