Hey all - my DSO Trump 58 had taken a fall back in April when it was out on a friend's shoot. I reached out to Rich a few times, but unfortunately haven't heard back since he's deep in cranking out lenses :001_unsure:

I wanted to see if anyone else had thoughts on a fix that I might be able to do myself in the interim.

Essentially, it looks like the interior threading for where the black hood meets the lens got pretty chipped up. It doesn't sit flush with the lens housing anymore, and the aperture ring doesn't seem to work properly anymore.

The lens fell on the hood, so the glass elements itself are fine.

Happy to take more photos if it'll help.

Thanks everyone!

I mean, Fuck Trump - but honestly, this didn't help Brendan out in the slightest bit.

I think the only person who might want to service that lens would be Richard Gale himself, but you might also try Peter at RPLens.com

Thank you Dan - looks like K Stewart deleted that bizarre comment!

i'll look into Peter - I know Rich would be ideal, but I know he's probably neck-deep in other orders/repairs, and have had trouble reaching him since April :/

Since this is basically a $50 lens, I would buy a new Helios 44 and take the whole thing apart and see what can be salvaged. I haven't played with the DS optics version, But I have taken apart and modified a lot of Helios 44s and a simple lens wrench is all thats needed.

Nick

Yeah, Nick is right but I even think the basic Helios is OKAY. Seems that design uses plastic intermediate threaded ring (which is broken into pieces on the photo) to put huge metal shell over tiny Helios. Poor design? Maybe not since the basic lens seems fine after a fall.

Still I'm disappointed there's no way to reach Richard Gale and buy the spare parts or have a consultation.

Anyone have a States-based lens repairer (aside from Duclos) that might be able to take a stab at this? It's just the threading that needs to be repaired as I was told by another lens guy, but he just didn't have time.

Write Gale an email or simply send it to him. Hes a pretty straight forward guy so Im sure he will give you a good offer to repair it, or replace it.

Or I have a 38, 58 and 88 I can sell to you :)

Hah! I may have to take you up on that. I've been trying to contact him since this happened in April of 2017 multiple times - no luck.

No joke,
I got a set have not used it much, like them but always end up on using other lenses. So my set is for sale with nice pelli case and everything.
Think they cost something like 6000€ new. So 2.5k € + shipping if anyone is interested.

THAT is an amazing price! :)
I have a set of Apogee’s and use them all the time. Love them!
This set can even be upgraded to the new «Clavius» lenses - the new rehousing-upgrade from Richard Gale. (And a 138mm APO is in the horizon too)

Cant find any info on the Clavius. You mean its an upgrade beyond the Apogee housing?
