  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC3 Wish list

- Good built in audio (as good or close to audio recorders such as h4n etc)
- Dslr like snappy 1:1 magnification
- Frame rate bump (6k 120fps would be satisfactory for me)
- Better compression ratios when filming high framerates (faster ssd tech should allow for this)
- Smaller + lighter body
- Updated Ui/Snappier
- Non proprietary SSD
- Built in ND or module
- Sub 10 second boot
- 6k FF sensor
- Improved black shade
- Improved long shutter noise/hotpixels.... would love to oneday be able to use a RED as a timelapse camera but i understand without a physical shutter this might not ever happen
- Smooth spinning knob built in side handle for accurate lens focus control
- Better RED batteries that dont lose capacity so quick
- Improved low light performance and DR
- Varispeed audio built into R3D file
- More project time base options.... Would love the ability to record in 120fps, playback in realtime with audio in camera, then be able to change playback speed to 0.5 or 0.25x for slow motion viewing

I love these threads! So I absolutely love this DSMC2 form factor. So I didn't change anything to it but make it lighter. That's all for form factor :)

1) the same form factor but lighter
2) 8K FF sensor low light capable (like Gemini) at 120fps
3) internal ND's
4) Canon like autofocus
5) better built in sound for just to attach Rode microphone to jack input and get a nice audio :)

I'm OK with sensor cropping. I think it wouldn't be possible smaller resolutions with higher fps without the sensor crop.

Basically gonna repeat what I already said before.

1 - User swappable sensors
2 - Built-in ND (please, please, please) OR at least amount like this without all the weird compromises.
3 - Better AUTO BLACK SHADE and faster.
4 - Faster readout (i.e. for rolling shutter) -- imagine better processing overall
5 - Keep the body the same and if it has backwards compatibility that'd also be genius.
6 - keep the price competitive, it went cray cray, then prices slashed and hearts were broken.

Less important but would be cool.
7 - Low Light mode on everybody
8 - Bluetooth
9 - A slightly lighter color than black, to dissipate heat.

For me would be:

- lower power consumption (around 30-40W/h)
- shorter FFD (adapters for all mounts)
- electronic ND/Motion Mount built in (updates version with no artifacts )
- Great AutoFocus (capable of driving 3rd party motors as well)
- Better audio in basic modules
- faster boot
- better/faster blackshade
- cheaper/faster media (and reliable)
- faster processing, so high FPS can have lower compression
- higher fps for "proxy's" (would be nice to be 240+)
- 4k 4444 12bit prores/dnx at 60fps+

This one I don't know if it makes much sense for Red, but would be nice to have kind of a SDK on the image pipeline.. opening it to 3rd parties, like they did to light iron on the DXLs...

That's what I can think for now

One thing mainly, that my DSMC2 modules still work.

Secretly hoping for similar here. Would love to see them keep a similar pin-out for the POGO so there can be some sort of "converter back" attachment to go from however they style the DSMC3 body to accept DSMC2 accessories. That way we can keep rolling with that we currently have, but maybe still sandwich new DSMC3 style accessories in-between the converter attachment.

Now that everything is being integrated (wireless systems, etc.) - it would be a huge bummer if DSMC2 accessories couldn't be moved over. They're becoming a very large investment in some situations.

What I'd love to see is the new DSMC3 system be able to talk back with accessories... bringing their options into the RED menu system. For instance, attach a wireless module and you're able to change the wireless channels or transmission data from within the camera menu. I'm sure there would need to be some sort of sandboxing to make sure that no interacting software locks up the cam, but I think it would be so cool to see software interoperability like that.

The main things for me would be different media, cheaper, faster and preferably not proprietary and FAR greater dynamic range in the highlights. Even at the expense of resolution, I doubt anyone would complain if it was a 6K camera as opposed to 8K or higher. Shadows are already clean enough, I think it's time to start adding stops above middle grey, especially seeing how the competition has the upper hand there and there's a high demand for it too. Getting more pleasing color - like Light Iron's profile used on the DXL - straight on the card would be fantastic too!

Internal ND
Faster UI (though I have yet to install 7.1)
Faster Playback/Record Toggle
Faster Magnify Toggle
1:1 Magnify, selectable on one output only, with finger control when touchscreen.
Faster boot times, with any media attached.
Faster Media and media module
Prores 4k 4444
Better resolution overlays (it's stupid but clients are seeing a good picture with a low resolution overlay)

4 independant outputs : 2 Pogos, SDI 1x, SDI 2x with each their separate overlays .
In-Camera Wireless HD Video (for smartphones, Foolcontrol, or network)

More Power available on the Sidekick slot (for Cableless Latitude & ACI)

2 CTRL ports :
1. Through the Sidekick slot (for Cableless Latitude & ACI)
2. Regular port on a module for Ronin or any gear.
Both of them have to be active at the same time.

12G-SDI for UHD/4k+ monitoring.
Red Ultrabright 4.7 display option.

Better Wifi module.
Bluetooth (for live gig headset monitoring)

Autofocus : Touchscreen object detection with object follow, 3D and eye detection.
In-Camera real time Image Stabilisation option when using less than full sensor (software)
Or better, stabilized sensor if we can keep Internal ND and lens mount swapping.
Or integration of gyro/stabilization for post in a bigger module.

Less powerdraw
Less heat, or even fanless if possible.

A big boys module sleeve like the Xenomorphs with all the options above. A Weapon XT...

Back Module backwards compatibilty (Bolt Module just came out afterall)
Side Module backwards compatibilty
Side Handle with Teradek RT Latitude compatibility

Not related, but an app to create overlays on computer.

We are loving our cameras, but some things that could improve

Some of my wishes:
- Biggest wish is a way of improving our focus. Being able to see the image in 100% with a small window or at least in 50%. Right now we are filming eagles in 8k but viewing in 1080p which is nearly impossible.
- More slow motion, even if it is just a burst. 100fps in 8k or more. Also in the lower resolutions, say 200fps or 300fps in 4k would be very useful too.
- Better stability with prerecord. It seems to be much easier to crash the camera in prerecord.
- Dual sensitivity in 8k
- More physical buttons on the brain. I would like to not use the interface almost at all
- Faster UI
- Built in ND filter, not as important now with the Kippertie Revolva
- Brighter main display
- Better audio. Now I just treat the camera as if it has no audio

Best camera in the world :)

I'll be happy if we can break the 300 MB/S barrier. It wouldn't too much to ask for double that speed in 2019. It's time for much faster recording media and much faster internal processing... just not at the expense of an unbearably loud fan noise.

1. internal ND
2. 2 output Hd-sdi indipendent
3. less noisy ventilation
4. 48+ volt phantom
5. more DR
6. 4k prores 4444
7. Blackshading in 10-20 second.
8. Wifi improve distance
9. more fast magnify ( monstro is so long wait in/out magify)
10. dual iso in any sensor.

Top requests for me would be full debayer for internal prores, 4K 444 prores or higher, quiet / predictable fan control, no black shade / warm up time, less moire/aliasing, less sensor smear, less rolling shutter, and 2 independent sdi. Internal ND would be amazing too.

Dear Red, for all of the people begging for internal NDs, please keep an option to not have them. Being married to optics that increase unwanted flares, reflections and other unwanted crap, as well as limiting lens choices by reducing the room for extended rear elements, at the sake of convenience is frowned upon by some.

Nick

I think everything has been said I will just add two more.

- Waterproof (will be amazing not to freak out with rain)
- Keep DSMC2 form factor, I want a gates housing to continue working!
