  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2. Unified.

Can it? I still haven't seen any clear evidence pointing to that. I've read DP's and shooters saying they prefer the image from Gemini over Helium, yet they have admittedly never shot Gemini. I even had a face to face conversation with a DP stating the same. Without testing, I think I'm just experiencing the hype machine. I'm a big Red fanboy, no doubt, I want it to be as good as people think it is. I'm planning a side by side with Helium to judge for myself ASAP.

Is there any unbiased Gemini vs Helium content out there? Not talk, actual images.
I'm not sure, I've seen some good Gemini vs Helium content here on the forums.

Some DR content:

I have had my buddies Gemini alongside my Helium the past few days, but the weather has been a bit crap here (I was hoping to do some sunny outdoor tests) and then I've been juggling a bunch of different stuff and haven't been able to shoot as much as I'd hoped. I did a low-light 5K 96fps test around a campfire at a friend's house, I've been hesitant to post it because it's incredibly unscientific. Basically, I wanted to give myself a "real world" challenge of if I had to match the wide FOV of 5K Gemini at 96fps using my 8K Helium cropped to 5K also shooting 96fps. It's a bit unfair to the Helium because in order to get wide enough, I had to throw on my Tokina 11-16, which is a 2.8 vs the 18-35 at a 1.8. This biggest thing I wanted to see side-by-side was the change in aesthetic. The crop factor+wide angle lens gives you super deep focus compared to the look out the Gemini.

I also rolled a couple short test clips of my ugly mug standing in front of both cameras, Helium set to 8K and Gemini set to 5K, both with Sigma 18-35s and Firecrest 1.5NDs, but I have yet to throw them onto my computer, might be able to do that a bit later tonight.

In the meantime, here is my really rough unscientific Vimeo link:

Dude..thanks for sharing! This is great stuff. Agree a little unfair on the side by side of the Gemini vs Helium given the lens difference. However, Helium aside, that nighttime footage is just insane with the Gemini. Those blacks are black, and surprising to see the clouds in the night sky behind the gentleman standing.

Wonder if this factors into things at all:
New Panavision DXL-M module for DSMC2

i mean in respect to how things shake out for CF Weapon/Monstro owners. I haven't had that one-on-one conversation, but I'd probably be happy with one of these (or a nice discount) in return for losing 24k of value. And/or that Primo EVF. I mean I don't know if they're going to be for sale, but it feels that way/I hope so.

Wow, cool to see some real low light Gemini footage, Josh! Thanks for sharing

Really? The start of what? Before there was CF Weapon there was Epic Dragon, and before that there was Epic-X, and before that there was Epic-M and before that Red One.

This is not a new story. Red’s upgrade policy is generous. It takes the sting out of their pricing changes, which are relentlessly aggressive. (As they should be for the company to be competitive.) When the upgrades to that CF of yours came around, an Epic-M Dragon, which cost $76K plus 10K formthe Dragon sensor, if I remember correctly, was worth the same as a Scarlet MX, which cost—well, a lot less. As you said, you made your ROI. Why the whining?

Being an early adopter has costs and benefits. When that game gets to be more than you can stomach, leave the table. Jarred has said clearly that he will take care of customers who ended up on the short side of this change. People (not necessarily You, Patrick) are throwing out fantasy world scenarios where nothing ever depreciates as if that might be a business plan for Red. It’s gotten more than a little silly.

David, The start of DSMC2.. and now we've reached the end phase of it (hopefully).. I've been a customer since Red One... you're preaching, brother.. I'm not whining. Just speaking up and recalling the promises and conversations the company had with CF owners.. Are you a CF weapon owner?

What from panavision is ever for sale? Nothing. It would make no sense if this was for sale. But it looks awesome.

I think it makes a lot of sense, they would sell a lot of them, particularly if it has 4k monitoring like i believe the DXL does. I'm aware that Panavision has been rental only (so far) but if they were to sell AKS they would probably do quite well. It would also be great for the Red partnership, let Panavision make the high end modules/AKS and focus on sensor tech and camera infrastructure. They only thing that makes me really doubt that could happen is the LiColor special sauce... but if it don't make dollars then it don't make sense.

Hey I have a Gemini & shot a short extreme low light test with the Gemini & one candle a couple feet away: https://vimeo.com/269566192

Just bought the GEMINI, is it normal that the logo on the front of the camera has the following?

RED DIGITAL CINEMA
MYSTERIUM PROFESSIONAL REDCODE

Thanks

It's been over two weeks since the initial announcement. Is there any clarity on this?

Considering that particular suggestion hasn't been done by Jarred, I won't hold my breath.
