  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2. Unified.

With this price drop, the dsmc2 8k with 60fps is really interesting.

Headache incoming for choosing between this and the Gemini :o

I'm not sure I follow your logic. New Scarlet W + Swap/Upgrade for Gemini = $27,000 or Gemini outright = $19,500 or used 2016 Scarlet W + swap/upgrade for Gemini = $26,468....so it looks more like $700 cheaper and the $6968 is devaluation of the used Scarlet W. Anyway I'll leave it at that, didn't intend to cause offence

New SCARLET-W is $12.5. SCARLET-W to DSMC2 GEMINI is $12.5. So, $25K. Not $27K.

Again, I go back to Jarred saying "The math wont make sense right now. Don’t try and make sense of it." I should listened to him myself and not replied to your original post in this thread, ha.

Thanks Ryan ;-) Well, I guess we'll wait till the dust settles then...

Yep, not a problem. If you are happy with your SW, I think you've got the right idea. Keep shooting with what you got. :) It's not like the announcement has caused your camera to become a giant paper weight all of a sudden!

On one hand it looks like it's a very wrong time to be a Weapon Helium CF owner ... I need to start recalculating on that ROI. But on the other hand.... I have a feeling things can get better for us...

The initial blow feels a bit harsh, but Red always seems to do right in the end. I have faith we will not be forgotten down the road.

bought a Weapon Helium 4,5 Month ago for 49.500€
i guess you will do a free „crossgrade“ to Gemini or do an
upgrade to Monstro for just 4.950€

i Hope you will do that!!! i am a RED User since 2011.

do not disappoint me.

But the monstro sensor went up $10k today since yesterday. But they might say today as a Weapon owner you can have it at the discount price of $30k!

This is truly a great step in the right direction. Love it.

For those of you that paid full price for your CF Weapon Helium/Monstro, my guess is that a cookie is waiting for you once DSMC3 comes along, that we who upgrade then, will pay for - ofcourse it will hurt if you were just about to sell your camera..

This is a great day, lets think with a longer perspective and reward RED for what they are doing.

Thanks Jarred and Brent!

Exactly. In fact even the pictures from a Red One are lovely. Too bad the old sensors aren't covered by any warranty, otherwise I think I would be still shooting with the MX sensor.

Sorry - my mistake, got the wrong price for SCARLET-W to DSMC2 GEMINI. Hopefully the math will eventually make sense!

While true, it does create a little fear in the lifetime of support for it. One doesn't want to have put $12,500 into a camera that's obviously no longer sold by the manufacturer, and worries that it might lose support earlier than the buyer envisioned.

Still, that's one of the things you have to swallow when you get into commercial gear in ANY industry. I've bought $25,000 printers that were replaced with $6,000 printers not even 12 months later. And then the parts were no longer available well short of 12 months after.

We use these rigs to make money -- and part of being in any technology sector means whatever we get today will be replaced quickly tomorrow -- so don't buy a camera you can't get work to pay off quickly enough.

NJ, the flip side is, we don't do upgrade programs? I don't agreed with your intimating that we have lost our ethos of looking after customers. We are offering a path for you to go from a SCARLET-W you bought in 2016 to a DSMC2 GEMINI now. It is cheaper than buying a new DSMC2 GEMINI outright. By $7000.

We are offering a choice. If you don't like what is on the menu, don't order it.

This isn't close to the philosophy of before. The Magnesium was $29 500 when it came out, meaning the price for my 200 hours 6K MG is around $13 000 minus the upgrade price. I've been around since the beginning and this isn't close to reasonable compared to previous upgrade options. Just a day ago the new price for a Gemini was $24 500, meaning the upgrade price for Weapon seemed reasonable, speculating $5000 as the upgrade price. Now, Gemini is way lower.

It's just chaos really and I'm just hearing echoing marketing jargon rather than the close relationship with long time red-users. There's nothing financially positive with upgrading in the price-range for us, other than loose talk of "being part of the future". All the upgrade options since the the early days have been rather reasonable, but the math for this is just off for everyone outside the area of the plan going forward. The idea has always been "we have no idea what we're doing". That's fine when it comes to innovation, but if it means putting long term users into a tough spot, that's really not a good strategy. Recent times I've gotten quite tired of the atmosphere around Red, the core people, not only among Red but close to the company has begun acting like corporate proxies, sales people and the core philosophy has lost much of it's touch.

It's not the same anymore, as it was a couple of years ago. I don't feel any of that energy, only the business jargon trying to look the other way from an issue... People said it before, MG owners got screwed, the MG cameras got pulled from the market, the prices reduced instantly and now our cameras value is listed at $13 000 in order to upgrade.

Really?

You CF Weapon owners don't sweat it.. I know you guys are holding the bag right now, Give Brent and I a few days we are working on something.

Of course some people will benefit more than others from this. Just like every upgrade / trade-in. With all of the bitching going on, I hope the people at Red don’t reconsider doing this in the future and make everything full purchase only. I have upgraded all the way from the Red One to the Epic-W. I still have a canon 5d mark I.

Keep up the good work. It is appreciated.

Thanks Jarred, Brent and team for putting this together.

Just a quick question, if I go for the Gemini upgrade, form Epic-W Helium, do I already get that new weapon internals?

Wtf guys, why are you ranting about this prices drops. Your cameras still shoot the same beautifull images. If some of you just dropped every single penny on a camera I am sorry but you are doing it wrong. You know the rules of the game it happens everywhere, technology is a risk because of the fast evolution every one changes phones every year for example. Still this is the same company that let's u upgrade your tools if you want to, even if it is completely outdated like the red one. I have been so freaking happy with my RED. I know it doesnt has the same value today, but who cares? I am not in the business of buying and selling cameras, I sell moving pictures, and they are fucking awesome. So this are my 2 cents. Keep shooting with your cameras and do what u love most. Don't think how much your camera worths. Think how much do you worth!!!

Peace

Yes, if you go from EPIC-W HELIUM to DSMC2 GEMINI, you have WEAPON-class internals.
