  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2 Side Handle / Redcast / ???

So W doesn't stand for Weapon?

It does and it doesn't. Jarred pointed out that it's not meant to be called Scarlet Weapon. But where else should it come from? And either way it's all good anyway - at least from my point of view ;) It's the Weapon form factor, so calling it a Scarlet Weapon does make sense user wise. And if that's what it's being called "on the street" - why not?

I believe they just wanted to make sure that there is a big difference between Weapon and Scarlet-W and still differentiate it enough from the DSMC1 Scarlet. Because the DSMC1 Scarlet was often not seen as a true contender buy a lot of users, but rather as a crippled Epic - sad thing because I love mine ;) Scarlet-W on the other hand is now a full blown champion.

To add a bit more confusion to all this: the RED product page only speaks of Weapon, Epic, Scarlet-W, Scarlet and Raven ;)

To be honest, I really like the new naming convention with Weapon. It's actually easier to understand, because with Epic the -X always was a bit cryptic. It was never truly clear if it stood for the sensor or not, because it was used as a body differentiation, but the comparison between X and MX is so close it always sounded as if it was meant to be the sensor suffix. So good on you Jarred and team for at least getting rid of it for Weapon! I guess I would have liked the Scarlet-W to be called Scarlet Weapon, but I understand why not :)

The only confusion within the Weapon names is now, that the difference in body material never meant a difference in performance for Epic, but for the Weapon it now does. But I guess once the Epic-X/Scarlet-X era is over it will all be a bit clearer anyway.

I don't know.
Both Epic Dragon and Weapon Dragon, display RED DRAGON (not Weapon or Epic) on the side but Raven displays RED RAVEN on its side, even though it also has a Dragon sensor. It's all very confusing.

The prototypes used to say Weapon until all the naming backlash. And then it went back to Dragon.

They really f***ed up the names royally. "Weapon Dragon"?! Are you kidding me?! Just try to say it out loud. I really hope the next sensor has a name that goes better with "Weapon"

I love my MG Weapon though. Great little camera.

Totally agree. Horrible names all round. It has brought many awkward snickers and strange comments from producers clients etc. I personally have hated the naming conventions from Epic onwards. I mean Epic, Dragon, Bomb EVF etc. seem straight out of some pubescent fantasy wargames or something. At least Mysterium had a bit of class to it. Cameras are not weapons but their antithesis !! Hard for people to take Red as seriously as they deserve with such infantile names.

It's truly hilarious to me looking "back" at those moments last year.

DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP] nomenclature can be a bit confusing, but it's also somewhat straight forward. RED needs to explain within the name somehow that you are dealing with a certain brain/body type as well as what sensor technology and maximum captured resolution is in there.

The real way to do this is (and this is all the currently known camera brains):

RED DSMC2 Lineup 03/19/2016

- RED Weapon Forged 8K Dragon
- RED Weapon CF 8K Dragon
- RED Weapon Forged 6K Dragon
- RED Weapon CF 6K Dragon
- RED Weapon MG 6K Dragon
- RED Scarlet-W AA 5K Dragon
- RED Raven 4.5K AA Dragon

So you have Brand, Body Class, Material, Maximum Resolution, and Sensor Technology. Camera specifications can be differentiated by Body Class and Material where Forged and Carbon Fiber (CF) have the most powerful processing power and largest data rates at 300MB/s, Magnesium at 225MB/s, and then we get into the Aluminum Alloy (AA) bodies which are currently both at 140MB/s.

That's of course with what's officially announced or released as of this moment.

One day these cameras will be able to upgrade to a new sensor technology, whose name isn't known yet, but it will be something like RED Weapon CF ?K unknownSensorName.

After things "calm" down I will probably reference billing/taxes/inventory/onset this way:
-RED W-8K (i.e. All forged and most woven will upgrade to 8k)
-RED W-6k (the MG)
-RED W-5K (short for the scarlet-w, I don't view scarlet as separate from the weapon line)
-RED Raven

That's fine for your internal use, but I'm more or less explaining exactly how it actually is so people can make sense of it globally.

It's not about separating Scarlet-W from Weapon or Raven, they are all part of the "DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP]" line.
