  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2 Compatible Batteries

I didn't know this thread existed, nice I'll be in here.

Had my Scarlet-W for about 3 weeks and haven't even used it except when testing batteries out.

2 of the 5 I've tested worked (Red Brick, HyperCore Red worked)

The problem is basically...the camera checks for the readout data, when it doesn't see it, it freaks out and turns off. The WEIRDEST part is, when I initially received the camera, I put one of my batteries on and powered it up and it worked. It did the low power mode, and it didn't shut off, it just went away and let me use it. I still read 0%, and the red LED on the side was flashing, but it worked. I even recorded some clips without a problem.

Anyway, these still aren't really out in the wild yet so it's been really quiet. But it's going to become an issue soon, I'm hoping that RED gets in front of it.

DSMC2 Compatible Batteries

This thread might be helpful to those about to invest in batteries for DSMC2.

1) Seems like currently with the DSMC2 Base I/O V-Lock Expander, mainly batteries that comply with RED protocol data. V-Mounts that do not follow Red battery status standards (ones that display Voltage) have a higher probability of not working.

What batteries on the market currently comply with Red battery standards? Here’s a few that I found, please add more

a) Red Bricks
b) PAGLink PL96e
c) Switronix Hypercore Red
d) Global Media Pro Red compliant models (but at 102mm they might be a bit wide).
e) Anton Bauer Cine series

What other batteries are Red Compliant?

2) I have non-Red compliant batteries. If I get a Base Expander (non V-Mount), can I attach a WC V-Mount plate to the back with the Red power cord and power the camera that way? Would that work?

3) Are there battery issues with other
modules - ET, Base Expander, etc??

I have a Scarlet-W received two weeks ago. It has been out twice for a total of 5 days on rental using Sony BP-FL75 v lock batteries with the V-lock base I/O without any problems.

Interesting in that they are a new lithium technology and only 12.8 volts nominal rather than 14.4 but they seem to work fine.

Hey Michael, do the Sony BP-FL75 have Red Protocol? Meaning does it show battery percentage? Or is it "Dumb," meaning it only shows Voltage?

Guys, our firmware team released an internal alpha firmware today that seems to greatly mitigate some of the non-RED battery issues folks have been having with Base I/O V-Lock Expander. We will continue testing but looking very good on this front.

NICE.

Great thanks...

Ps little bit of feedback...if we put the DSMC2 REDVOLT XL MODULE on without the base I/O module and power from a Vlock that communicates we can NOT recreate...

Just got my new power solution today:

Wooden Camera Quick Back plate + Anton Bauer gold mount plate + AB Digital 190. Thought I'd post a few pics for anyone interested.

Hallelujah! Just the fact that you guys are on it so fast makes me happy. Most other companies would take months to get to Alpha. Fingers crossed.

That didn't take long. Hoping those Kayo Maxtar v-mounts work, as they seem like the best bang for the buck by a large margin.

Quick question - I'm new to the larger capacity batteries coming from a GH4.

Am I correct in saying that the PAG links offer the best wh / weight ratio. 96 wh / 1.6 lbs?

You beat me to it, Brandon! Yes, v6.2.51 is the one you want, folks.

EDIT: In this version, where available, will show voltage of battery on power up. That voltage meter is not lowering real time with usage so to see actual power remaining, you will have to rely on battery itself or a reboot. Our engineers wanted to roll this release out as is and are aware of the ask to have meter be real-time...

I just did the firmware upgrade and my 190wh Ikan batteries still don't work via the element technica vllock plate. The batteries worked fine before on my epic with the red vlock module. I have a small IDX battery that works fine. So does this mean my large batteries aren't ever going to work since RED just gave us the firmware update to address this?

New Firmware up on the SUPPORT page.

Third Party batteries work now.

Wow, that's great news Brandon. Now you can starting kicking ass on your S-W. Which 3rd party batteries did you try?
