Someone please tell me I am not seeing things right... this looks like minis, but WHY?!?!

The 3rd announcements showed full size XLRs:

Thank you Peter for documenting what was showcased.

The screen looks to be 4:3 which got me wondering. There would be enough space for a 16:9 screen plus info below it. Dreaming? Sure, but this is Red we are talking about. :)

Remember they are supposed to be wireless already... oh dreaming...

It's rare to hear you say that Jim. :-) One in a million ain't bad though.

For those of us that go as light as we possibly can, and just need a single mike, is there going to be a slimmer I/O module so we can get an XLR (or mini) and ditch the BNC etc ?

Minis are on the front of the brain... :-)

When Jim says " minis" he is referring to mini 3.5mm jacks. The XLR inputs on the modules come in two flavors, Full size XLR's on the pro IO module and mini XLR's on the compact IO module.

The mini 3.5mm input on the front will allow you to use a shotgun or lav in a compact form without the IO modules.

sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeT

Oh how I wish these cameras were out yesterday

These are all the options I could dream of. Anything you want. Very cool.

Thank you for the answers. Hope I didn't distract you from all the work you must be doing. :)

Converging upon perfection

Converging upon perfection

With every update this camera system seems to be converging upon perfection. When you announced Scarlet a year ago it was amazing but there were a few things that I didn't think were ideal. (I still would have bought it since it was better than anything anybody else was talking about.) Since then you have fixed everything I wanted changed plus a whole bunch of things that I hadn't even thought of or hadn't thought possible to fix.

The coolest thing about Scarlet/Epic now is that it isn't a camera but a whole range of cameras ranging from the mid level to the incredible. And the flexibility that you will be able to reconfigure the pieces to suit just what you need at any given time.

I am particularly intrigued with the mechanical coupling shown on the front face of the module shown in the first post. It looks like it is going to be really solid. That will be critical when you have several modules all linked together.

Didn't know there's a compact I/O module. Coolness!

Does one really lose anything using a mini XLR instead of a full size? Other than the need to buy a pretty affordable special cable or an adapter?

Not much really, but in my understanding:
Every additional connection adds a very small amount of noise. Other than that there is the small additional potential for issues with gear and the need for back ups. I suppose the full size XLRs may be a tad sturdier, or at least have the potential for being so. Finally, full size is simply more common.

Finally, full size is simply more common.

And MUCH bigger, so the main issue is size of the I/O module.

However we will offer both (mini-XLR and XLR) versions of an I/O module...
