I thought it was... not so.

Hm.
What scenes were shot with the EPIC?

Ask Soderbergh.
What's your point?
Jim
This pretty much sums up DSMC...

Thanks Jim. I look forward to Stephen's next films which I assume will all be Epic, including the Magic Mike that IMDB says is filming now![]()
One of the difficulties in shooting for both motion and stills used to be motion blur if you shot the motion at 180 degree shutter or higher.. Now with EPIC and HDRX you can shoot one track for motion, and use the HDRX shorter shutter track for sharp stills.
This sounds like a very cool option. The exposure will of course be different, though. Assuming proper exposure for the A track shooting at the recommended 800 ISO, if shooting the X track at +2 stops it would have to be pushed as though it was shot at 3200, correct? Will an Epic still shot at 3200 ISO be "cover-photo-worthy"? If so, all I can say is, "Impressive. Most impressive!"
In the article you linked, looks like Greg Williams solved the motion blur issue another way: he shot at 48 and 96 fps!
You can light to 640 or 500 if you have the latitude. Experimenting with a +1 stop HDRX option so you can get a 1/96 effective shutter if you are shooting at 1/48th for motion, that way you only are pushing a stop.
Ah, thank you. A while ago I remember some debate about whether it was worth including a +1 stop option for HDRX. Sounds like this is a very good reason to have it! 1/96th ought to be fast enough for most portraits.
Jim, you mentioned on this thread frequently about continuous lighting ... and I know you guys are very familiar with companies like Briese, B2Pro, etc that offer amazing HMI solutions.
However, as far as I know, B2Pro doesn't sell -- and Briese doest seem to be operating under the "the best AND affordable" model that Red does.
So this makes me curious -- does Red have plans to get into lighting at some point?
You are one of the best ever examples of "if you want something done right, you better do it yourself" ... and it seems lighting would be no different.
Just finished watching a doco on Soderbergh... I so love is faith in himself.
For years I thought I was doing everything wrong compared to the way others make films... I'm so glad I watched that Doco, Soderbergh has just confirmed for to me that Im doing everything right.
Look forward to meeting the guy one day and thanking him...![]()
What's the Doc Mark???
