DSLR-killer...

Does it work with Canon and Nikon glass?

if they'd use micro 4/3 a substandard of 4/3, that looses the extra distance to the sensor needed for a mirror, adapters would be possible.

Let's face one thing... A DSLR for professionals need to have the compability with all the stuff that Canon and Nikon has. It also needs to be able to have glasses from all the major companies (if not EOS and Nikon) like Sigma, Tokina, Tamron, Zeiss etc. Even so, the glasses Canon and Nikon makes far surpass most things on the market and if Red's DSLR wants to compete professionally it needs to work with these, which ain't possible if these lens-companies won't make mounts for it. The DSLR must also be able to work with Elinchrome and other professional brands in flash-equipment, including IR or radio transmitters.

Well, the bottom line is that to be able to be a true DSLR-killer it takes much much more then higher DR, filmcapabilities better then d900/5d and low noise. To be able to really compete I believe that the ability to choose either Nikon or Canon mounts is a MAJOR thing to consider. If Red makes a DSLR that can mount Canon EOS lenses and work just as good as on a Canon body, then it might just be the true DSLR killer.
I will not give up my collection of Canon lenses just because there's a camera with lower noise and higher DR. I don't think any professional photographer will... I'm absolutely sure that trying to prove that Red is the best thing within filmmaking is much easier then breaking the DSLR market, partly because it's already digital and it's come a long long way already.

Honestly, 4/3 and MFT talk is just getting really annoying now. People are jumping on the bandwagon of Micro 4/3 fans and frankly, why would I want a standard designed around a sensor with a 2x FOV crop versus what I get with my current stills cameras? Red is capable of a lot, but I don't think they're capable of defying the laws of physics. With a larger sensor we can get less noise, greater dynamic range, and less diffraction at a given resolution.

DSMC must be at the very least s35 to get any sort of following. To kill the DSLR it has to have an 8/35 sensor or larger.

Been trying to get in touch with someone at RED for a while WRT software for your new DSLR killer, but so far no luck. How does one get in touch with the right paries at Red in this regard?

It simply isn't possible to make a DSLR that works with "all of the above" when it comes to lenses because all lens systems have their differences as do the lenses themselves when it comes to their AF and IS. However, it will be a good while after the camera is released before RED has a suitable array of lenses for full use of the camera unless they bitchslap the competition out of the starting gate with a complete line of lenses ready to ship, which would give the other guys a very rude awakening. Like you, I use Canon L-series lenses and have significant money invested in them but I won't have any problem switching to another camera system if I choose to do so because there I can easily sell the existing gear to those who want to buy it without incurring any real financial losses.

I wonder how RED plan to "be part of the future" in an industry like this one, were giants like Pentax or Olympus have hard time to get to the shelf with CaNikon and now Sony.
Pentax know how to do lenses, but also have Tokina on their side, sensors from Samsung monster.
Olympus Zuiko makes possibly the Pro most perfect lenses one can imagine, sensors from Panasonic monster.
Canon & Nikon are not bad at it... :)
Sony has the Minolta engineers and Zeiss AND Tamron on their side. And well, Sony is a monster.
This is really competitive!
I want to believe this is going to be great, but is really hard to.
By the way, if the project is called a "DSLR killer" it means it isn't a DSLR, but something like the Sony R1 or Fuji S100fs style, is it?
I can tell you right now that if it is that, it won’t kill the DSLR of fotogs that like the nice bokeh of a Zeiss f1,4 lens.
If it is something else like say a Panasonic G1 HD, no mirror so is not a reflex, could be a “DSLR killer” too, then they will need some solid lens catalog to be considered. Fast zooms, fast primes, and a high range zoom, not easy to do! Take years to build a system like that.
Not that people are not ready to change of toys... I recently sold all my Nikon gear for the Sony/Zeiss combo. But Zeiss helped take the decission, what have RED to offer?
It sound to me like it will be some kind of Panasonic G1 HD with better video.
So what? That’s not a DSLR killer.

This for some reason sounds very familiar.... oh yeah, I remember now;

Its the same thing people said 2 years ago when we announced the RED ONE.

heh heh heh. :)

am I allowed to ask whether this is a "superzoom" with good video killer, too? (For us normals, non-professionals, with wives that will only carry so much camera to the park with our 4 children)

I hope they slip in a sneak preview of this with the epic/scarlet announcement... I have RedBalls !

Omg!!!

Omg!!!

Just mind-blowing!
Great Future (I'm glad to have a Red One by now)
Just impressive.

Thanks Jim, your vision just give to cinema another dimension.

DSLR killer? For $12,000 I can get a full-frame body with no lens mount, no viewfinder, 3 available zooms and 1 available prime. Then I get to add a lens mount, an EVF, an LCD, and end up with a huge, heavy camera that costs as much as a car, still has no optical viewfinder, and what for autofocus?

For substantially less money than just the "brain" (a little over half), I actually own a 5D, three L zooms (17-40L, 24-105L, 70-200/2.8L IS), three primes (15mm fisheye, 35/1.4L, 85/1.8), a flash set (2 580EXs and 1 550EX), and I get an optical viewfinder and phase-detection autofocus all in a body that weighs 1.8 pounds and costs $2,000 right now.

What have I missed here? Jim called this a "DSLR killer" while the reality seems to be that is has absolutely nothing to offer to dSLR shooters in the way of increased performance or flexibility, while costing around 10 times more.

I think Scarlet and Epic are fantastic movie cameras, and, of course, have the capability of shooting single frames. In no way are they DSLR killers for all the reasons Lee Jay mentioned above.

I think Red will announce another member of the DSMC family in a few months, and that one will be the true DSLR killer. There is always hope!

wow, holy crap.
This specs are amaizing!! and very interesting for the high end super-pros with 45.000$, but he competition is closer to Mamiya, Hassel, Leica S2, Rolleiflex Hy6 in photography but ads video to it, unbileveablebut, although not in the same league as the last FF 35mm DSLRs at all.
Not much of a deal for a "normal" pro photographer.

I think if you were looking for a serious "video" camera (I guess "motion" is the word now), you'd be thinking a lot differently.

Agreed....leaves most pro still photographers out, not to mention the hobbyist like me.

Totally agree.

I guess some people (myself included) were expecting something closer to a 1Ds MkIII with a kick-ass 24fps video mode for around $10,000. As it stands its $12,000 + monitoring option by the look of it.

I'm in now way disappointed by the products announced today. It looks fantastic. One of the 2/3" Scarlets is on my shopping list - probably the interchangable mount unit, the prime set and hopefully a RED mini-zoom if such a thing exists.

Its just a case of people re-aligning whatn they had convinced themselves they were going to see with reality. Lots of people are still in that stnned silence/shellshocked phase. Anyhoo, I imagine there's one hell of a party at RED HQ right about now!
